JOB TITLE: Data Management Specialist

REPORTS TO: Chief Technology Officer

ANNUAL CALENDAR DAYS: 240 (12 Months)

JOB GOAL: Oversee the Student Information System (SIS) operations and support technology implementations that interface with the SIS. Obtain and distribute information from the Alabama State Department of Education relative to all required data systems.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must comply with all employment criteria established by the Opelika City School Board of Education
2. Bachelor’s degree in Education or Computer Science, Engineering or related field preferred
3. Minimum of five (5) years’ successful experience in the field of education
4. Valid state-issued driver’s license, reliable transportation, and evidence of car insurance
5. Possess the ability to use effective interpersonal communication techniques, including proficient oral and written communication skills
6. Demonstrated aptitude for successful completion of an assigned task
7. Experience with Alabama public school SIS applications preferred
8. Attention to detail with regards to data
9. Experience in effectively managing multiple tasks/projects
10. Experience in designing and implementing training, projects, and programs
11. Experience in organizing and leading teams
12. Working knowledge of current technologies
13. Experience in Microsoft Office applications preferred
14. Experience in Internet applications preferred
15. Experience in programming applications preferred
16. Experience in database management preferred
17. Experience in State of Alabama business rules as it pertains to Student Educational Records preferred

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness
2. Oversee the day to day operations of the Student Information System (SIS) for the district
and schools and serve as the technical point of contact
3. Train and assist district and school personnel on utilizing the SIS and other supporting data
systems and applications in regard to entry, retrieval, storage, security, manipulation,
reporting, data collection, printing and disposal of data
4. Coordinate the installation, configuration, maintenance, and security of SIS software at the
district and school levels
5. Manage the district data and provide feedback to local schools concerning consistency of
data
6. Import and export data to and from third party software
7. Assist CTO with preparing and maintaining MOUs and MOAs with software
vendors and contractors
8. Assist the district and schools in the collection, organization, analysis and reporting of
disaggregated data required by local, state, and federal programs
9. Create, manage, document, and execute SIS exports and reports, and maintain data
system quality control
10. Serve as a point of contact between the Alabama State Department of Education and the
district relative to changes, data collection, additions, upgrades and deadlines.
11. Provide technical assistance and support in troubleshooting and problem solving with data
system users (staff, administrators, school personnel, outside vendors and service
providers)
12. Keep all schools informed of issues related to SIS and requirements of district and state
through timely meetings and emails
13. Support school and district web-based applications, including online data enrollment and
data verification
14. Assist in the preparation of written materials (i.e., procedures, system level
documentation, reports, memos, letters, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities,
providing written reference, and/or conveying information
15. Assist in maintaining the current SIS environment, including user accounts and security groups/roles, and recommend improvements in processes and workflows according to SIS best practices
16. Maintains a test environment and plan, implements, coaches and trains for new releases and program updates
17. Assist with and/or develops and maintains campus and master scheduling timelines and related activities (course catalogs, sections, etc.) as needed
18. Support data analysis, student assessments and grading, and accreditation reporting needs
19. Maintain appropriate system documentation on procedures and configurations
20. Serve as Tier 2 support within IT on user questions, customization & reporting requests, and technical problems within SIS, with ultimate responsibility for end-user support
21. Be regular and punctual in attendance.
22. Maintain confidentiality of any Board of Education related business.
23. Perform other related duties as assigned.
