QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidate must have an administrative certification in Alabama (or be eligible to obtain an Alabama certificate); a master’s degree in education administration is preferred but not required; skills in school management, leadership, budgeting and personnel supervision; middle school experience preferred but not required; five years of classroom experience required; and three years administration preferred.
Must meet the suitability criteria for employment as required by the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and ACT No. 2002-457.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
ANNUAL CALENDAR DAYS: 240 Days (12 Months)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The principal is responsible to the superintendent and serves as the instructional and administrative leader of the school. Working with staff, students, and community to ensure a high-quality educational program and to formulate and accomplish the school mission is the principal’s major task.
Instruction
Implementation:
- Provide effective leadership in planning developing, implementing, and evaluating the instructional program.
- Serve as chairman of the school’s faculty advisory committee.
- Establish regular meeting times.
- Assure that the views of all members are considered.
- Prepare agenda for meetings and makes sure minutes are taken and kept.
- Ensure that decisions are made quickly after all available information is in hand.
- Provide a safe, orderly environment that facilitates teaching and learning.
- Provide a climate of high expectation for staff and students.
- Maintain a balanced teacher’s load.
- Plan and implement new faculty and student orientation programs.
- Supervise the selection and acquisition of materials and equipment.
- Coordinate securing substitute teachers when needed.
Special Services:
- Coordinate activities of resource and support teachers.
- Coordinate orientation activities and follow-up activities of interns, lab students and visitors.
- Supervise the organization and operation of the Instructional Materials Center. This includes all services of the Instructional Materials Aide and Clerical Aide.
- Establish and implement means of dealing with pupil irregularities consistent with school board policies.
- Identify and place special education students through the IEP process.
- Handle discipline problems.
- Deal with excessive tardiness and absences.
- Continuous Improvement Plan.
- Supervise, observe, and evaluate teachers and staff.
- Provide professional opportunities for staff.
Community Relations:
- Coordinate Community Service (community resource people).
- Communicate and clarify the school’s mission.
Administration
Policies:
- Establish procedures to ensure that all teachers are aware of and implement the content of state courses of study, instructional and administrative guides, position papers and instructional policies.
- Interpret and enforce federal and state laws as well as state and local board policies.
Records, Budget, and Finance:
- Prepare budget and supervise maintenance of accurate financial records.
- Approve purchase orders, local and system.
- Supervise monthly financial reports.
- Supervise the local ledger.
- Supervise instructional allocation.
- Supervise the maintenance of accurate records, report cards and permanent records.
- Establish procedures for collecting and keeping accurate records for fees, insurance, school pictures and any other monies collected in the local school.
General Responsibilities:
- Supervise registration and attendance.
- Coordinate transportation services.
- Plan and assists with discipline.
- Establish local procedures for loading and unloading.
- Provide supervision of transported students before and after school hours while on the school campus.
- Assume responsibility for scheduling.
- Assist in the recruiting, screening, selecting and assignment of school’s certified and classified staff.
- Supervise the maintenance and upkeep of the building and grounds.
- Supervise all extra-curricular events to include but not limited to sporting events, band, choir etc.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Community Relations:
- Coordinate community services (such as Health Department, Mental Health, Pensions & Security, Project Uplift).
- Coordinate P.T.A. activities.
- Disseminate other information.
Emergencies:
- Establish and supervise procedures for emergencies, such as fire, storms, snow, and civil disorders.
- Establish and supervise first aid procedures.
Professional Development
- Plan and accomplish personal professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics.
- Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication.
