The Surgical Services Director is responsible for the oversite of the overall daily function and operations of all Surgical Services, including Pre-Admit, Pre-Op/Holding, Same Day Surgery, Central Sterile Processing, Operating Room, and Recovery Room. The Director assists the Chief Nursing Officer with patient care supervision, management activities, staff development, and upholds the standard of practice of a professional nurse in caring for infant through geriatric patients in the perioperative setting. Works in collaboration with interdisciplinary team members to ensure the highest quality of patient care.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assists the Chief Nursing Officer with patient care supervision, management activities, and staff development.
- Coordinates quality initiatives and process improvements.
- Provides daily operational resource management including supplies and equipment, as well as rendering clinical expertise for unit staff and physicians for problem-solving on patients, processes, and family issues.
- Demonstrates behavior appropriate for a professional role model.
- Demonstrates leadership skills through involvement in unit activities.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills.
- Provides for the delivery of patient care through the utilization of the nursing process.
- Directs and guides patient / family teaching.
- Coordinates rounding on patients & staff
- Actively participates in Shared Governance Councils
- Directs and guides ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
- Assists in the orientation, skills development, and evaluation of nursing personnel.
- Participates with the Chief Nursing Officer in the development and implementation of the philosophy and objectives for Nursing Services.
- Responsible for the Clinical and Service area. Develops and monitors operational and capital budget.
- Develops plans for staffing and programs of area.
- Analyzes nursing services to improve quality of patient care and obtain maximum utilization of staff time and abilities.
- Interviews applicants and makes recommendations for employment; follow progressive discipline program, and makes recommendations for interventions / terminations.
- Develops and implements clinical, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
- Serves as liaison between administrative / medical staff.
- Promotes an awareness of patient’s age, growth, cultural, and spiritual differences.
- Facilitates unit meetings and shared governance / leadership efforts.
- Manages the unit to ensure patient and employee satisfaction while promoting safety and retention.
- Plans and implements strategies and processes to maximize efficiency and meet objectives
- Sets annual goals for the department and monitors progress of goal achievement through the LEM
- Organizes the functions of the department and allocates use of available resources
- Staffs department appropriately according to productivity standards
- Recruits, hires, trains and develops staff
- Monitors staff performance including goal setting and performance reviews
- Establishes and maintain departmental controls
- Formulates and enforces department policies and practices
- Coordinates financial and budget activities for maximum operational efficiency
- Facilitates the preparation and analysis of reports
- Reviews various performance metrics (i.e., financial, HCAHPS, employee engagement survey) to monitor and measure results, productivity & goal progress
- Responsible for the achievement of department productivity and quality goals
- Engages in and implements the Journey to Excellence tactics for the department
Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing required. Masters degree in Nursing or Heathcare related preferred.
License & Certification: Registered Nurse in the State of Louisiana required. BLS required. ACLS and PALS preferred.
Experience: 5 years in supervisory/leadership experience required.
Additional Experience Preferred
- Relevant Advanced nursing credential required or must obtain within one year of hire (CNOR, etc.) Broad hospital clinical experience
- Current knowledge of clinical practice.
- Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques, and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration, and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care.
- Provides Nurse Manager on call coverage on a rotating basis.
- Five years of management experience as an RN in area of specialty is required.
