Job Summary
The Director of Development is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating development plans that result in expanded, sustainable financial support for Open Hand. The successful candidate will bring innovative, strong fundraising, relationship-building and management skills, marketing experience, and outstanding writing and communications skills.

Duties / Responsibilities
Strategic Resource Development Leadership and Planning. Provide strong leadership and direction to Open Hand’s fundraising and marketing efforts, developing a comprehensive strategic fundraising framework that will enable the organization to successfully raise a growing amount of sustainable support from all categories of donors, while strengthening brand awareness and marketing. A key focus will be developing and implementing a plan to provide a sound basis for common planning and implementation of fundraising and marketing efforts inclusive of the needs of the organization’s social entrepreneurial activities, including Good Measure Meals™.
Cultivation and Solicitation of Prospects, Current Donors and Strategic Partners. Serve as Open Hand’s key champion, passionately conveying the organization’s mission and value. Strengthen the organization’s development functions to position its growth from fundraising to developing sustainable, fiscally supportive relationships. Convey Open Hand’s mission, programs and visions in a way that clearly defines and communicates its essential purpose in the community and is continuously compelling for donors. The Director of Resource Development will proactively fortify existing relationships and build new, long-term relationships with diverse major gifts, individual prospects, as well as corporate, foundation and civic leaders. Develop a deep understanding of each donor’s unique needs and wishes and deepen relationships and ensure an exceptional customer experience. Will lead and participate in soliciting contributions and guide the staff and board in becoming more engaged in face-to-face asks at all levels. Maintain an active portfolio of relationships, individual prospects capable of making transformational gifts, cultivation opportunities and solicitations.
Marketing and Public Relations. In Collaboration with Open Hand’s contracted marketing firm, oversee and evaluate Open Hand’s marketing and communication activities. Collaborate with volunteer services to increase recognition of Open Hands brand. Enhance and expand relationships, particularly in the business, nonprofit and religious communities in an effort to increase the number and diversity of the agency’s volunteer corp., building the visibility of Open Hand’s programs and services activities, particularly in the public health arena. Maintain positive public relations with all constituents in the community, the Director will work with contracted marketing firm to implement public relations campaigns to help promote the organization and educate the public about its work.
Staff Leadership. Responsible for building (or enhancing) esprit de corps within the development and marketing team as they take on the challenge of implementing new strategies and enhancing successfully proven efforts. Develop and oversee the fundraising and marketing budgets, report and analyze results to achieve optimal results. Ensure excellence and accountability in fundraising and marketing. Accordingly, the Director should be experienced in staff management, performance evaluation, coaching and professional development.
As a part of the leadership team, the Director of Resource Development will be expected to communicate and collaborate with other directors and senior staff members, the board, and volunteers; guide the coordination and collaboration of the organization’s development marketing and volunteer service efforts with the work of other agency departments; and recruit, train and retain a high performing staff, identifying performance objectives and providing feedback on performance.
Required Skills / Abilities
- 5-7 years of fundraising / marketing experience with proven track record of incremental annual growth.
- Knowledge and familiarity with CRM systems. Give Effect preferred.
- Strong working knowledge and experience in utilizing social media to support fundraising and community outreach objectives.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to create compelling cases for support.
- Proven ability to cultivate and nurture donor relationships, with a keen understanding of donor motivations.
- Supervisory experience includes coaching and motivating teams for high performance.
- Creative, insightful individual who enjoys crafting innovative solutions to challenges.
- Lead with integrity who understands that ethics, transparency and relationship building are the keystones of successful fundraising.
- Outstanding skills in broad-based fundraising; with specific demonstrated ability in the areas of major gifts and individual fundraising.
- Results-oriented leader with a record of success in having developed and implemented development strategies that will take an organization to the next level.
- A self-starter with high energy, integrity and a strong work ethic with a record of excellence, initiative and resolve.
- Ability to get along with diverse audiences and personalities while displaying tact, maturity and flexibility
Education / Experience
Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred
Physical Requirements
The employee is regularly required to sit at a computer and lift and / or move 15 pounds. A valid driver’s license and personal vehicle is required.
