Work Schedule: The typical work week is forty (40) hours. During periods of high activity (i.e., during OBR deployments and events), the position may require working during evenings and weekends. This position requires travel. Throughout the year, you can be required to travel for up to 14 consecutive days. Travel is a mandatory requirement of having this position.

Position Summary: The Controller plans and directs the accounting operations of the company. The Controller is responsible for maintaining financial accounting and grant support services in order to meet the needs of the organization and its donors. The Controller will focus on compliance, financial reporting, grant reporting, budgeting, variance analysis, process improvement and will provide support to the accounting department as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Integrate all aspects of the OBR way into your day-to-day operations, mentoring and developing your department on the OBR Way.
  • Supervise up to 3 personnel.
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handle discipline and termination of employees and in accordance with company policy.
  • Oversees the operations of the Accounting Department, which include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
  • Oversees training programs and identifies training needs.


Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Oversee the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
  • Recommend benchmarks that will be used to measure the company’s performance.
  • Produce the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management.
  • Provide financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Servesas a contact for the external auditors during the organization’s Annual Audit; provide auditors with special reports and schedules as required; respond to auditor inquiries.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements.
  • Act as liaison for outsourced accounting and advisory firm.
  • Complete administrative tasks including, but not limited to, expense submissions, paperwork, forms, company-assigned trainings, and document reviews.
  • Work with supervisor to complete employee evaluations as assigned.


Grant Management, Reporting, and Compliance

  • In collaboration with the Head of Finance, provide management with status of grants, both actual and projected, along with analysis and recommendations relative to costs and revenues.
  • Develop special use reports regarding the status of grants awarded to the organization; work with departments to reconcile grant expenditures to the General Ledger.
  • Administer financial functions relative to assigned "grants" which includes recording grant expenditures, revenues, accounts receivables and deferred revenues.


Bookkeeping and General Accounting:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, client ledgers, and general ledger entries.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts related to receivables and deferred revenue.
  • Prepare journal entries and assist with month-end and year-end closing procedures.


Financial Reporting and Analysis:

  • Perform variance analysis and provide explanations for budget-to-actual discrepancies.
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports for managers, grant funders and auditors.
  • Collaborate with various department managers to develop grant budgets.
  • Assist in the preparation of budget proposals and grant applications.
  • Track and analyze budget performance, providing regular reports to management.
  • Identify areas of cost savings and efficiency improvements.


Compliance and Regulatory Requirements:

  • Review new requirements and pronouncements from grantors and the Uniform Grant Guidance (UGG) to determine the impact on the organization’s financial operations; recommend revision to existing policies or establish new policies as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting principles, tax regulations, and relevant legal requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of tax returns and financial audits, including preparation of the Schedule of Federal Expenditure (SEFA)
  • Monitor grant expenditures and compliance with grant funding guidelines.


Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work across the organization to streamline processes and improve financial systems.
  • Collaborate with program managers and other stakeholders to provide financial insights and support decision-making.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field required.
  • Minimum of three years as an Accountant or similar role, preferably at a nonprofit.
  • Experience reconciling and monitoring multiple grants and funding sources preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP; experience with grant reporting and regulation preferred.
  • Nonprofit Audit Experience, preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel, internet browsers, web-based programs, and email.


Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Math Ability:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


Physical Demands:

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Able to travel as needed.
