Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region provides a comprehensive model of eye care with experienced specialists, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians providing patient-centered eye expertise in Albany, Clifton Park, Schenectady, Schodack, and Troy. Whether a patient is visiting us for a routine visit, to treat a common eye condition or has a more serious eye disorder, we endeavor to provide the highest standard of comprehensive eye care services with excellence and compassion that will consistently exceed expectations. Position Summary:

The Ophthalmic Technician performs a range of duties which include preparing patients to see a provider (preliminary exam, medical history, & testing), preparation of examination and treatment rooms, performing basic and routine vision screening examinations, administering eye medications, cleaning and maintaining ophthalmic instruments and assisting physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Greet patient promptly and professionally; escort them to exam room(s) and waiting area(s) throughout their appointment.
  • Perform complete ophthalmic history and preliminary exams, sub-specialty tests (refraction, VF test, A-Scan Biometry (IOL master), Pachymetry, PAM evaluation, color testing, OCT imaging and fundus photography).
  • Verify patient information by interviewing patient, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit. Accurately record all information in EMR system according to established standards and provider requirements.
  • Check condition of patients' eyes by observing pupils, muscle, visual acuity, and extraocular movements.
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmology examination by dilating pupils and monitor changes in visual acuity, or elevated extraocular pressure and communicate results to provider.
  • Educate patients on provider orders such as, use of drops, contact lenses, drugs, and answer questions about surgery and specialty imagining required/ordered.
  • Perform set standard number of patient work-ups based on established times while maintaining quality of customer service.
  • Process prescription refill requests.
  • Maintain office equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and promptly reporting equipment issues.
  • Maintain stock in exam room in accordance to standard inventory and provider preferences.
  • Maintain stock for minor office procedures and sterilize all related instruments.
  • Set up and prep for minor office procedures to include setting sterile tray and maintaining sterile field.
  • Follow legal and proper protocol for disposal of medical instruments and waste to ensure a healthy environment for patients and employees.
  • Use universal precautions and required personal protective equipment with all patient encounters.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and other healthcare regulations.
  • Travel between medical offices, as directed by management, to ensure adequate patient/provider coverage.
  • Perform other clinical and administrative duties as needed/assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to effectively complete manifest refraction, visual field test, OCT imaging, and Goldmann tonometry.
  • Software proficiency, specifically with Microsoft products and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) applications.
  • Familiarity with healthcare, medical, and/or ophthalmic terminology.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license.
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with patients, providers, clinical staff, colleagues, managers and others.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Attentive to patient needs/excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all team members to ensure quality patient care at all times

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of ophthalmology or Ophthalmic Technician experience.
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Certification (COA).
  • BLS certification.

Work Environment:

Ophthalmic Consultants of the Capital Region is a busy private practice with 13 providers and five office locations. Employees are frequently engaged in repetitive tasks and are occasionally exposed to biological hazards including, but not limited to, blood borne pathogens and/or or physical risks which require following basic safety precautions. The noise level is usually moderate.

Additional Information:

This position requires work to be performed on-site in one or more of our medical office locations. Ability to travel to and between our office locations is required. All applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
