UTHealth Houston Ophthalmology is hiring for a Low Vision Occupational Therapist to join their team of professionals. The Low Vision Occupational Therapist will be responsible for: coordinating all occupational therapy to ensure appropriate patient treatment; conducting patient consultation, evaluation, and program planning for all patients; facilitating support groups; and more. The ideal candidate will have certification in low vision with additional preference given to certification in orientation and mobility.

Position Summary:
Provides professional, educational, and clinical skills in organizing and directing occupational therapy services for ophthalmology patients.
Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Coordinates all Occupational therapy to ensure appropriate patient treatment.
2. Conducts patient consultation, evaluation, and program planning for all patients.
3. Develops home exercise programs to instruct patients in the required exercise for treatment.
4. Reassesses patient status on an ongoing basis to ensure that treatment goals, plans, and program are appropriate.
5. Participates in the development and writing of clinical research protocols; utilizes knowledge of area of expertise (e.g. therapy) to promote safety and efficacy in research questions, protocol development, interventions, and outcomes.
6. Develops educational programs to increase patient/family and community awareness of Occupational therapy treatment including department faculty, staff, researchers.
7. Recruits and screens patients, enrolls suitable candidates for participation in research protocols.
8. Assists in the preparation of progress reports and grant proposals to both private foundations and governmental agencies.
9. May require traveling to the patient’s home as part of rehabilitation process.
10. Must be able to utilize microperimetry, a kitchen/ ADL training room, Dynavision, driving simulator, etc.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
Licensed by the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners
Completed or be enrolled in advanced training/certification in vision rehabilitation
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Working knowledge of MS Office
Minimum Education:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy.
Master's or Doctoral degree preferred.
Minimum Experience:
One (1) year of relevant experience required. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:
Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
