Job Overview:
As part of a strong and cohesive team that works through shared values to achieve the mission of the United Way of Greater Houston (UWGH), the Behavioral Support Specialist for the Early REACH Program will have expertise and professional background in supporting young children, typically from birth to age 5 who experience behavioral, social, or emotional challenges. The Behavioral Support Specialist works closely with childcare administrators, educators, families, and other professionals to provide coaching, resources, and strategies that foster children's emotional regulation, social skills, and positive behavior at home and school settings. Collaborates internally with Early REACH Coaches, Managers, and the Compliance Support Monitor to address behavior challenges. This intervention ensures children have the foundation needed for lifelong learning and healthy development.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments and evaluations to identify the behavioral, social, and emotional needs of young children: Observe classroom dynamics to identify triggers for challenging behaviors and opportunities for improvement. Collaborate with teachers to develop individualized behavior plans tailored to each child's needs, using evidence-based tools and techniques.
- Provide targeted intervention and support: Engage in collaborative discussions with teachers and administrators to address classroom-wide or individual challenges. Provide families with resources and guidance to implement strategies effectively at home. Serve as a liaison between families and childcare centers to ensure a consistent, cohesive approach.
- Provide training, coaching, and resources to early childhood professionals: Develop and conduct regular sessions on topics like positive behavior strategies, inclusive classroom management techniques, and understanding developmental milestones. Equip teachers with tools to manage challenging behaviors, such as de-escalation strategies and reinforcement systems. Train teachers to recognize and respond to children affected by trauma or adverse experiences.
- Maintain detailed records of assessments, intervention plans, and progress: Prepare reports for parents, childcare centers, and other stakeholders as required. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and ethical guidelines.
- Supports team in any planning or activities needed as related to the Early REACH Program: Planning and organizing activities related to the Early REACH Program. This includes coordinating resources and supporting the implementation of program objectives to ensure successful outcomes.
