Commercial Underwriting Internship Overview
Commercial Underwriting Interns at Hastings Insurance will gain exposure to our organization's culture, mission, and vision and how Underwriting contributes to each. They will work alongside experienced Underwriters, build internal and external relationships, and participate in projects that will allow them to learn about our Underwriting practices and methods.
- Internships will start on May 12th, 2025 and run for 12 weeks, wrapping up on August 1st.
- Interns will work a full-time schedule of Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Ideally, the Intern will work a hybrid schedule consisting of both in-office (1-2 days per week) at our Hastings, Michigan headquarters, and the rest of the week remotely.
Internship Duties & Tasks
- Gain an understanding of the criteria underwriting evaluates for each multi-line risk, focusing on new and renewal lines of business.
- Support Underwriting with a focus on recognizing departmental goals from a regional perspective and objectives related to growth, loss ratio, and retention.
- Participate in projects, either with a mentor or individually, that support the commercial underwriting strategy of the company.
- Learn about the variety of commercial accounts that Hastings insures.
- Utilize Hastings systems, network, and applications used in the underwriting process.
Intern Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program from an accredited institution, majoring in a business-related field. Junior / Senior-level Insurance or Risk Management majors are preferred, but all grade levels will be considered.
- A minimum of a 3.0 GPA within the major program is preferred.
- Minimum 2.5 GPA cumulative GPA required.
- Prior relevant experience through part-time employment or past internships is helpful but not required.
- Ability to work at least one day weekly at our Hastings, Michigan offices either by residing in the area or within a reasonable commuting distance (housing assistance is not provided).
- Demonstrated professional written and verbal communication ability.
- Proficiency with general business applications ( i.e., Microsoft Office).
