About the Role
We are seeking a dynamic Senior Director, Membership Experience (Advisory Practice) to lead and coach an emerging team whose mission is to design and deliver valuable programming and advisory offerings for our members (employers, educational institutions, workforce development organizations, and other stakeholders). To achieve this aim, you will design and implement a suite of services that will be used to coach our members on how to take a skills-first approach to talent recruitment, development, and retention, enabling them to evolve their workforce to where all talent can shine. You will work cross-functionally to understand and leverage the organization’s extensive capabilities of research, analytics, and storytelling, as well as our data-driven technology product offerings. Ultimately, your efforts will enable us to engage, retain and grow Opportunity@Work’s prestigious membership base.
This role is a great opportunity for an experienced membership or advisory services executive who is passionate about workforce development, economic mobility, and creating opportunities for STARs. Given the early stage of this emerging business offering, you will have the opportunity to build a highly-impactful set of membership offerings that will result in a $20B boost in annual earnings for STARs. And, you will have ample opportunities to build and advise an extensive network of C-level and executive talent across sectors while supporting our important mission.
This role can be performed in a remote work environment, with periodic travel to the Washington DC headquarters, to key client sites and to periodic conferences (10-15% travel). We can also accommodate candidates who prefer to be based in our office in DC.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker with a proven track record of :
- Fostering engagement and trust with senior level influencers across blue-chip employers, strategic partners and workforce development organizations
- Building scalable processes to increase replicability of excellent programming
- Managing and coaching a team of membership professionals
Membership Strategy and Model Development :
Design and implement a comprehensive membership strategy that aligns with the organization’s mission and goals of driving economic mobility for STARsWork across product, marketing and senior leadership teams to develop and refine the membership value proposition, membership tiers, benefits, and pricing, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of members and supports the organization’s long-term objectivesCreate and execute an effective roadmap for membership growth and enhanced experience related to talent recruitment, engagement, and retention strategies, with a focus on replicability and scalability of offeringsDevelop and manage membership programs, offering members access to research, webinars, working groups, and other member benefitsCollaborate with senior leadership to integrate membership strategies into the organization’s broader strategic plansMember Engagement and Retention :
Serve as the primary point of contact for key members, representing the organization at events, meetings, and other forums (10-15% travel required)Build and nurture relationships with members, ensuring they feel valued, supported, and connected to the organization’s missionDevelop and implement member engagement strategies, including events, communications, and personalized interactions, to increase member participation and loyaltyPartner with Research and Analytic Services teams, to monitor and analyze membership data, identifying trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement in member engagement and retentionInnovation and Continuous Improvement :
Stay abreast of trends and best practices in membership management, workforce development, and skills-first hiringDevelop member feedback mechanisms to ensure continuous improvement of offeringsLead initiatives to innovate and improve the membership experience, including the use of new technologies, partnerships, and programmatic offeringsIdentify opportunities for collaboration with other organizations and stakeholders to enhance the membership experience and expand the organization’s impactLeadership and Collaboration :
Manage and mentor a team of membership professionals, providing guidance, support, and development opportunities to help them succeed in their rolesCollaborate with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, Product Development, Research and Analytic Services, to ensure a cohesive and integrated approach to membership experience.Provide insights and recommendations to senior leadership for ongoing decision-makingQualifications
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
This role is open to individuals skilled through alternative routes.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in membership management, employer advisory services or a related field, with a strong track record of success in building and growing membership programsExcellent client management, advisory and coaching skills, with a passion for engaging and supporting a broad array of stakeholdersExperience engaging stakeholders across sectors, moderating content, developing community guidelines, and providing feedback to members.Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate vision into actionable plansProven leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and develop a team to achieve ambitious goalsAnalytical skills, with the ability to leverage data to drive decisions and measure successProficiency with leveraging membership management software and CRMsExperience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization, particularly in workforce development or economic mobility, is highly desirablePersonal Characteristics
