Status : Part-Time (2 - 3 days)

The Organization

OpSam Health is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that serves the San Diego County community. Founded in 1973, we provide primary care, dental, behavioral health, family planning, integrative health and wellness, and other health-related services to the uninsured, underinsured, and underserved families of all income levels regardless of their ability to pay.

Position Summary

The Optometrist provides comprehensive vision care and performs routine eye exams to detect common ocular conditions, vision problems, and diseases. This position works as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care, including prescribing corrective lenses and offering preventative care.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed eye exams to assess vision and diagnose eye conditions and diseases.
  • Educate patients on eye health, vision care, and preventive measures for conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
  • Treat and monitor patients with ongoing eye conditions, adjusting prescriptions and recommending treatment as needed.
  • Work with other medical professionals to integrate vision care into the patient's broader healthcare plan.
  • Oversee optical inventory, including eyewear and contact lenses, ensuring appropriate stock levels.
  • Refer patients to specialists as needed and follow up on treatments, surgeries, or changes in vision.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
  • Maintain and manage optometry clinic equipment, ensuring they are properly calibrated and functioning.
  • Oversee the ordering of optical supplies and inventory management.
  • Work closely with optical staff to ensure seamless coordination between eye exams and eyewear prescriptions.
  • Provide consultations to patients about eyeglass frames and lens options based on prescriptions.

Qualifications

  • Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Valid California Optometry License and DEA certification.
  • Experience working in an FQHC or community health setting is preferred.
  • Proficiency with EMR systems and knowledge of optical tools and equipment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on patient care and customer service.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with other health professionals.
  • Knowledge of vision care products and services, including the latest developments in optometry.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Physical Demands

  • Normal office and clinical environment.
  • Ability to perform eye exams, including close visual tasks and use of clinical equipment for long periods.
  • Ability to move throughout the clinic, standing or sitting for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. for inventory or equipment management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong time management and organizational abilities.

    65.00- $85.00 / hr based on experience
