We are currently recruiting for a Medical Director for Adult Medicine .The Medical Director Adult Medicine will have 40% devoted to administration with the additional 60% devoted to direct patient care.

Position Summary : Under the general supervision of the Chief Medical, Health & Wellness Officer, the Medical Director works closely with Operations and Nursing to support the clinicians and clinical teams and site leadership / management team (i.e., Nurse Manager, Practice Manager) in overseeing the day-to-day administration and delivery of patient care at all Optimus sites for a designated discipline. Together with the Directors of Nursing and Operations, the Medical Director will provide guidance to the clinicians and clinical staff at one or more assigned locations. In this capacity, and in partnership with the Practice Manager and Nurse Manager at that location, the Medical Director will set the tone for clinical practice and operations, modeling the delivery of team-based integrated care both clinically and administratively to ensure the smooth delivery of care to meet clinical, quality, financial and operational goals.

The Medical Director will support the Chief Quality & Transformation Officer in ensuring quality and comprehensive medical care delivery and development for health care plan and programs across Optimus including Peer Review activities and assist with patient billing when appropriate. In the absence of the Chief Medical, Health & Wellness Officer, the Medical Directors will serve as the senior clinical authority for the organization on a rotational basis, providing clinical guidance and support to clinical staff at all Optimus locations and remotely (e.g., during on-call hours) as needed.

In addition to the administrative clinical leadership function, the Medical Director will provide direct patient care in his / her / their designated specialty. The time for this position will be allocated as follows based on discipline, department size and volume of administrative work :

  • Medical Director, Adult Medicine - 40% devoted to administration with the additional 60% devoted to direct patient care.

The administrative work allocation defined above for the position will be carried out at the discretion of the Medical Director while ensuring there is engagement with the clinical teams. All clinical and administrative allocations are subject to change based on the needs of the organization.

In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, the Medical Director will be directly responsible for the following functional areas :

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions listed below are not all-inclusive for the position.

1. Clinical Informatics : in collaboration with the Clinical Informatics Clinician Specialist and Transition Clinician(s), participate in the development / optimization of EPIC workflows for patient documentation, completion of in-basket tasks and WIPs.

2. Clinician Staffing / Coverage : In collaboration with Director of Nursing, Nurse Manager and Practice Manager, ensuring adequate clinician staffing at all clinical sites; this may include moving staff where needed and / or providing additional direct patient care.

3. Monitors clinician clinical performance; in collaboration with Quality Department, ensures completion of Peer Review activities for clinicians providing care in the discipline(s) under their supervision.

a) Note : Pediatric, Adult Medicine and Ob-Gyn Medical Directors will review one chart per month for all Family Medicine practitioners to ensure practice alignment in all disciplines in keeping with the organization’s Peer Review requirement.

4. Monitoring Clinician productivity and scheduling works with Practice Managers to review clinician schedules, establish and confirm productivity targets, identify barriers to success, and provide support as needed to facilitate adherence to these targets

a) Regularly review clinicians’ quality score cards with the support of the Senior Quality Coordinator

b) Regularly review clinicians’ productivity and documentation in Epic (e.g., using Signal) with the support of the Clinical Informatics Clinician Specialist

5. Under the direction of the CMO, works with Nurse Managers, Practice Managers, and clinical staff to advance the model of Team-based Care in designated units and throughout the organization, and to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care in their respective clinical departments.

a) Ensure that clinicians in their respective clinical departments are adhering to daily huddle and other protocols designed to assist in the delivery of high-quality care and the achievement of organizational goals.

6. Champions organizational initiatives and demonstrates the ability to pivot easily and effectively between clinical and administrative priorities, giving appropriate weight and attention to each.

7. The Adult Medicine, Pediatric and Family Medicine Medical Directors will be practicing Physicians responsible for providing high-quality primary care services by diagnosing patient conditions using but not limited to, analyzing reports, test results, medical records, and immediate-family histories and including examinations to diagnose condition of patients and propose treatment options.

8. The School-Based Health Center Medical Director will be either a practicing Physician; or a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with an advanced degree (e.g., DNP, other relevant doctoral degree), who will then carry the title of Clinical Director.

9. Directs and coordinates the patient care activities with nursing and other support staff as required; works collaboratively with Directors of Operations, Director of Nursing, and others to advance the Team-based Care model at all Optimus clinical sites and throughout the organization.

a) In collaboration with SBHC Nurse Manager, ensures adequate and appropriate ordering of supplies and formulary-authorized medications across all SBHC sites.

10. Initiates and ensures adherence to established departmental policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and / or infection control standards.

11. In partnership with the Nurse Manager for the designated site(s), provides clinical supervision to clinical staff, including annual performance appraisal participation; responsible for evaluating clinicians’ panels (panel management), ensuring work in progress (WIP) is completed, and executing regular responsibilities as outlined on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis (see attached). Ensures and facilitates the prompt submission of clinical patient encounter data necessary for tracking and billing.

12. Reviews and resolves clinical patient complaints with Practice Manager, Nurse Manager and clinician(s) involved as well as Director Patient Experience where necessary; and regularly shares results of OHC’s patient satisfaction surveys with respective clinician(s) for improvement where appropriate.

13. Attends daily huddles of clinical teams to ensure adherence to best practice(s); attends meetings of the clinical departments and other departments as needed; supports CMO by ensuring participation in regular monthly meetings of clinicians to ensure effective communication and compliance with HRSA requirements and Joint Commission mandates.

14. Works with the Practice Managers and Administrative Assistant / Clinician Liaison to establish and maintain clinician schedules including on-call schedules as indicated, clinical assignments, and rotations; supports Practice Manager in providing coverage for scheduled and unscheduled absences; works collaboratively with other members of senior staff on operational policies and procedures.

15. Attends Risk Assessment / Performance Improvement (RAPI) Committee and other organizational committee meetings as scheduled (or arranges alternate representation as needed) and brings information back to share with staff; participates with other committee members in the development and oversight of organizational policies, procedures, business models, and strategies.

16. Works closely with staff from Nursing, Operations and IT and provides input as needed for clinical template development and to optimize the clinician’s experience in working with the EPIC system.

17. Serves as collaborating physician for clinicians in his / her / their department. Supervises clinician onboarding in department; provides 3-month performance appraisal and annual performance appraisals thereafter. Supervises, advises, and trains clinical professionals and / or students in their area of expertise.

a) For the School-Based Health Center role : if not a physician, regular collaboration required with an identified Medical Advisor on an ongoing basis and for clinical questions as they arise.

18. Advises, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates the performance of clinicians under direct supervision in conjunction with the Human Resources department.

19. Approves time-off requests for clinicians under direct supervision always ensuring adequate staffing coverage.

20. Participates in recruitment / retention activities including interviews for clinicians for designated sites.

21. Performs other duties as assigned or requested to maintain a high level of patient care and service.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

1. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of patients in a diverse community.

2. Ability to work independently, and to interact with colleagues and other staff in a team environment.

3. Knowledge of clinical operations and procedures.

4. Comprehensive knowledge of modern principles and techniques of general medicine and public health, as traditionally practiced.

5. Ability to work well under pressure analyzes and evaluates individual member’s needs, reach sound conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.

6. Must be detail oriented and be able to multi-task effectively.

7. Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care.

8. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and / or infection control standards.

9. Knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in area of expertise.

10. Knowledge of the availability of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in area of medical expertise.

11. Knowledge of and efficient use of electronic medical records; EPIC preferred

12. Ability to supervise, advise, and train clinical professionals in area of expertise.

13. Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage.

14. Ability to develop and present educational programs and / or workshops.

15. Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.

16. Effective verbal and written communication skills.

17. Experience with telemedicine helpful.

EDUCATION :

Must hold MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school and licensing as a physician; for the School-Based Health Center role, MD, DO or an advanced doctoral degree (e.g., DNP, DMSc) with relevant professional experience. Master’s degree preferred in Health Administration (MHA) or Public Health (MPH).

EXPERIENCE : Three to five years of clinical management experience required in a community healthcare setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant area(s) of medical specialty and clinical operations.

LANGUAGE SKILLS : Bilingual English, Spanish desirable but not required.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION :

Current unrestricted Connecticut License to practice medicine as and MD or DO; or for the School-Based Health Center role, Nurse Practitioner or PA license and documentation of advanced doctoral degree.

Active Federal DEA and Controlled Substance Registration

Board Certified in Specified Area of Medical Specialty if applicable.

Current CPR certification and ACLS certification required
