Description
The Chemical Mix Technician works to ensure resins, polymers and other chemicals required by manufacturing are provided in an uninterrupted and timely manner. The Technician is also responsible for assisting the Quality Department with the review of incoming chemicals to make certain that they meet required specifications. The Technician will also assist the EHS Coordinator with the solid and liquid waste process.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Required to operate and inspect Powered Industrial Equipment.
Work requires the use of liquid volume measuring devices, scales, mixers, thermometers, and materials handling devices. Various chemical components are measured to very close tolerances and blended and mixed with others under rigid handling conditions.
Work requires the use of personal protective devices including such things as safety shields, gloves, aprons, and disposable air purifying respirators.
Work requires careful documentation of work done to assist in possible future research into the source of variations in production and for inventory control purposes. This documentation is also used for reports to regulatory agencies and for mass balance reports.
Incoming quality control work requires the use of various laboratory equipment.
Conduct all operations in accordance with relevant ISO requirements.
The Chem. Mix Technician may also be required to perform special investigations to assist in solving operational problems and to provide support to R&D personnel with mixing of experimental formulations.
Heat, transfer, supply chemicals to support the Manufacturing Departments as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates
Follow prescribed safety guidelines in accordance to ORAFOL Americas Inc.s Safety policy; including Safe operation of all ORAFOL equipment, the use of required PPE and housekeeping.
Adhere to ORAFOL Americas Inc.s Quality and Environmental policy and procedures at all times.
Perform other duties as assigned or as the situation dictates.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Chemical Mix Technician is responsible for assisting the Hazardous Waste Managers (HWN) with the daily verification of compliance with applicable hazardous waste management requirements; including adherence to applicable satellite accumulation (SAA) and 90-day container storage area (MAA) requirements.
Generation of hazardous wastes during production may include ignitable solvents, solvent wipers and debris, used oil, non-hazardous resins, and non-hazardous solids.
Responsible for verifying that satellite containers are compatible with their contents and are sealed unless waste is physically being added or removed.
Because Technicians routinely handle hazardous waste and Orafol is a large quantity generator (LQG), Technicians are required to attend annual hazardous waste training required by 40 CFR 262.34 (a)(4).
Technicians are also responsible for placing containers in the appropriate storage location within the hazardous waste storage area and for verifying that waste containers have adequate secondary containment. This includes segregating potentially incompatible wastes. In the event of a release of hazardous waste, Technicians will isolate the immediate area, warn others in the affected area and notify the primary and/or alternate emergency coordinator. ORAFOL employees are only authorized to respond to incidental releases as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 29 CFR 1910.120.
The Chemical Mix Technician will also conduct the required pre-transport functions prior to the off-site shipment and management of hazardous waste. These activities include the following:
Review, approve and sign applicable shipping communication such as the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest, other shipping document such as bills of ladings, shipping labels/markings, and Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) notifications.
Verify compliance with applicable Department of Transportation's (DOT) regulations for the safe and legal transportation of hazardous materials.
Successful completion of initial and tri-annual refresher Hazardous Material Employee training as required by the DOT in 49 CFR 172.704.
Must meet medical requirements to wear respirator.
Assisting with the maintenance of appropriate records and completing required reports related to the disposal of wastes. These records and reports include:
Uniform hazardous waste manifests.
Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) notifications.
Qualifications
Education Requirements:
High School Diploma required at a minimum.
Associate Degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent preferred.
Hazardous Waste Training; including DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation, HAZWOPER, Hazardous Waste Handling, Hazard Communication
Work Experience:
3-5 years hand-on chemical mixing/storage/use experience.
1-3 years experience w/ environmental services & reporting.
Must have experience in a manufacturing business.
Proficiency in computer applications (MS Office) required.
ERP system experience.
Must have a proven track record of achievements.
Experience in the use of laboratory equipment (such as FTIR).
