JOB DESCRIPTION
Supervises and manages the day-to-day operations of the athletic team, including coaching, recruiting and fund-raising activities. Provides leadership and support for the vision and strategies of the department and university.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- RECRUITING: Exercises discretion and judgment in evaluation of prospective high school, junior college and other qualified athletes for participation in athletics at ORU. Tasks include selection and evaluation of prospective athletes; meeting with athletes and parents; coordinating and networking with high school, junior college and other coaches, recruiters and scouts; physical visits to athlete’s school and residence; preparation and presentation of material concerning ORU; plan for, conduct and coordinate official and unofficial onsite visits by prospective athlete and family (including meeting with coaches, players, academic advisors, student host, faculty, etc.). Makes highly significant and influential recommendations to Head Coach regarding scholarships.
- COACHING: Exercises discretion and judgment in coaching athletics and assisting head coach in intercollegiate athletes during practice, games and other permitted occasions. Exercises discretion and judgment in making decisions regarding assigned coaching area, including determining drills and areas of practice focus; review and evaluation of coaching and player concepts for assigned area; implementation of assigned coaching area into practice schedule; evaluation of student athletes’ performance in assigned areas; makes significantly influential recommendations to Head Coach regarding assigned coaching area; review and evaluation of opponents’ players in assigned area; and adjusts coaching techniques based upon strengths and weaknesses of athletes.
- FUNDRAISING, PUBLIC RELATIONS & MARKETING: Participates in fundraising and public relations activities as required. Attends required athletic functions as required. Speaks to civic groups as required. Solicits athletic department donors through various promotional activities sponsored by the department and athletic program to supplement program's existing budget.
- ESTABLISHING GAME SCHEDULES: Performs various administrative duties as required. Schedules games and practices, both home and away contests, and arrange for contracts for games. Interfacing with both Departmental and University administrators. Organizes team travel to away contests, including mode of travel and lodging. Makes arrangements for tournament, including inviting teams, ordering trophies and gifts and organizing lodging and practice times for visiting teams. Travels with team and monitors conduct of student athletes. Attends athletic department, conference, and NCAA meetings as required.
- PROCUREMENT & PURCHASING: Assists in ordering team equipment. Monitors condition of equipment and order replacements as necessary. Oversees student managers to ensure the necessary athletic equipment is available for scheduled practices and competitive events.
- COMPLIANCE: Attends coaches' preparatory meetings and implement strategies resulting from these meetings. Assists with collection and analysis of tactical and statistical data of opponent’s teams and assists in designing game plans and strategies. Attends preparatory meetings and implements strategies discussed. Coordinates and interfaces with officials. Attends conferences and seminars for current NCAA regulations and compliance issues.
- COMPLIANCE: Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program; to include adhering to all Departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University, the Conference and the NCAA.
- COACHING: Monitors the conditioning and training of student-athletes, in conjunction with the Strength and Conditioning Coach and the Athletic Training staff. Assists with the planning and administration of the off-season training program, as requested.
- SPECIAL PROJECTS: Assists with special projects as assigned by the Head Coach. Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent knowledge and experience
Skills & Abilities:
- Two (2) years of experience as a junior college, college or university coach or assistant coach in this sport is strongly preferred. Previous experience in supervising coaching staff is required. Experience in recruiting players is helpful.
- A thorough understanding of the University is helpful.
- Candidates should be proficient in the use of Microsoft software to include both Word and Excel. Candidate(s) must be willing to learn other software applications that are indigenous to operations in Athletics.
- Must be able to articulate thoughts well for the purpose of effectively communicating information one-on-one, in groups or in large public settings.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are paramount for effective communication with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Has a displayed ability to be a self-starter and works well both as a team member and independently.
- Must have an eye for detail with regard to mailing pieces and all other forms of communications that represent the University and Athletics.
- Good reading, mathematical, oral, written, and grammatical skills are a must.
- Must be able to maintain organization in conjunction with a busy schedule.
- Must have the ability to handle the stress associated with meeting deadlines for projects in the midst of handling interruptions.
- Must have the ability to exercise diplomacy when confronted with difficult questions or situations.
- This person stays “well-read” for the purpose of keeping up with current events both internally and externally.
- Must be able to exercise sound judgment regarding organizational and departmental regulations, procedures, and policies. (NCAA, O.R.U., etc.)
- Maintains a professional demeanor at all times especially for the purpose of receiving and responding to inquiries and transmitting information.
- Quickly establishes and maintains rapport with alumni, students, faculty, university staff, and administration. Works cooperatively with a variety of personalities.
- Maintains confidentiality of information given the nature and scope of information that is available to this office.
- Must accept and be openly supportive of the purposes and goals associated with Oral Roberts University.
