Starting Pay Rate: $15.00 per hourJob SummaryThe Specialist I’s are responsible for performing work collecting and disposing of trash and debris at public beach accesses and their parking lots. Work also includes removal of marine debris and trash; and other duties as assigned. The Specialist I’s are also expected to assist and support the other department divisions and programs.Work requires frequent physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, bending, or similar activities and recurring lifting of heavy items of 25-50 lbs. Supervisory responsibilitiesNoneEssential functions: •Cleans, maintains, and disposes of trash at beach accesses and park areas.•Repair and maintain garbage receptacles and make repairs to beach accesses as needed.•Using trash grabbers, pick up loose garbage at beach accesses.•Completes required reports and maintains records as needed.•Maintain inventory of related equipment and supplies.•Assists with wildlife incidents as needed.•Performs basic custodial, maintenance and light construction tasks.•Removes debris, abandoned equipment and other items from beaches and/or waterways.•Handles, sorts, shreds and processes collected materials as needed for disposal and/or recycling. •Operates machinery and equipment needed for the disposal and recycling process.•Interacts with the public, beach vendors, and others about rules and violations. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: •Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, and general public•Verbal skills to communicate effectively with staff, supervisors and the general public•Ability to safely and effectively operate a motor vehicle and trailer•Ability to operate common hand tools, power tools and small equipment safely•Knowledge of city and departmental policies, rules, and procedures•Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions in accordance with established policies and resolve conflicts presented by the public.•Reading skills to understand laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to the operation of the department and facilities•Knowledge of local waterways, roadways and beaches•Ability to safely and effectively operate a 4x4 motor vehicle in an off-road environment in proximity to people and obstacles Qualifications: Possess a valid Driver's License.Education and experience: Possess a High School diploma or equivalent experience.Possess and maintain a current Red Cross First Aid/CPR and AED certification (training will be provided)Additional requirements: Willing to work overtime, weekends and other non-standard hoursOther duties: Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
