Job Title: Library/Media Specialist

Reports To: School Principal or Designee

Job Goal: To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety of materials that invite intellectual growth, and to aid in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources. To provide teachers with resources to support classroom instruction.

Qualifications:

  • Holds or able to acquire a valid teaching certificate in Alabama with proper endorsement in Library/Media
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned duties or responsibilities
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
  • Operate and supervise the media center assigned
  • Create a welcoming/nurturing environment conducive to learning
  • Evaluate, select and requisition new library materials
  • Assist teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes library materials available to supplement the instructional program
  • Maintain a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all library materials, and instruct teachers and students on use of the system
  • Arrange for inter-library loan of materials of interest or use to teachers
  • Work with teachers in planning assignments likely to lead to extended use of library resources
  • Promote appropriate conduct of students using library facilities and throughout the school
  • Help students to develop habits of independent reference work and to develop skill in the use of reference materials in relation to planned assignments
  • Present and discuss materials with a class studying a particular topic, on the invitation of the teacher
  • Participate at curriculum meetings as requested
  • Serve as manager of the school computer network
  • Change arranged book displays and exhibits to pique interest of the library program
  • Assist in preparing and administering the library budget
  • Supervise library aides in the performance of their duties
  • Participate actively in library and other educational and professional associations on the local, regional, state, and national level
  • Surplus and discard older materials/resources according to existing Board policy
  • Supervise the clerical routines necessary for the smooth operation of the library
  • Promote the use of technology throughout the school
  • Organize and maintain the school inventory program
  • Train teachers in the care and operation of equipment
  • Conduct periodic inventories of books, equipment, and materials
  • Exercise general supervision over the scheduling of materials for classroom use
  • Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides
  • Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students
  • Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes
  • Actively participate in and work with school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities
  • Actively participate in and work with school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings and in-service and staff development activities as required or assigned
  • Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports
  • Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and generally conducive to learning
  • Properly uses and cares for equipment and material resources of the school system
  • Supports and complies with school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations
  • Performs other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by supervisor(s)

Terms of Employment/Salary: 9, 10, or 12 months as assigned / To be determined, commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

Evaluation: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Certified/Classified Personnel.
