The Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) serves some of Orange County's most vulnerable student populations and provides support and mandated fiscal oversight to 28 school districts serving more than 600 schools and approximately 475,000 students.

In addition to providing direct instruction to students through its own alternative and special education programs, OCDE administers an array of programs and services that are critical to the operations of local school districts and community colleges, facilitating professional development, legal guidance, payroll, career and technical education support, high-speed internet access, Local Control and Accountability Plan assistance and approval, resources for families, and student enrichment.

Job Summary

OCDE's Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D / HH) Total Communication Program serves deaf and hard-of-hearing students in grades 7-12. OCDE provides the educational staff for our middle and high school programs. Our classes are located on the campuses of Venado Middle School and University High School, both located in the city of Irvine. This highly specialized staff must be able to utilize a total communication approach which employs conceptually accurate signed English as the primary signing system with the support of American Sign Language (ASL) and English-based sign systems. Our students are educated with their hearing classmates to the maximum extent, which is beneficial to the students. Career and vocational education is an integral part of the program and is infused into the curriculum. Motivating students to develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to realize their fullest potential is one of the most important aspects of the program.

OCDE's Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Total Communication Program is currently recruiting for Substitute Teachers for the school year. This position provides instruction in secondary mathematics, reading, language development, and / or content areas (i.e., social studies, math, and science). Teachers in our program use sign language, finger spelling, and total communication skills in instruction and communication with D / HH students and staff.

Requirements / Qualifications

Education and Experience : Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be :

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstration of rigorous standard of quality through a state of local assessment including knowledge of and the ability to assist in instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Licenses, Certificates, and Special Requirements :

  • Meet the Basic Skills Requirement through one of the methods listed on Form CL-667 on the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing website - Applicatns who have not worked in a certificated position for a California public school district within the last 39 months, must verify that they have satisfied the basic skills requirement and must include a copy of their document with their application.
  • A Bachelor's degree and satisfying the basic skills requirement are required for the Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit.
  • Long term assignments require a California teaching credential authorizing service in the appropriate specialty area.

    Before receiving authorization to work in this position, the individual selected will be required to provide a current negative TB authorization, within the last 60 days, and submit fingerprints for the purpose of conducting a confidential background investigation and record check. The tests are arranged and paid for by OCDE.
