Job Description

Equipment Mechanic I

General Functions

Performs basic and routine mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles.

Performs basic tasks, under the general guidance and instruction of experienced mechanics, in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, light and heavy duty trucks and other heavy equipment, trailers, and/or small engine equipment.

Work is performed under direct supervision the Senior Forman or assigned supervisor after receiving oral instructions or written work orders as to the nature of the work to be performed. Performance is evaluated through observation and review of repairs performed.

Representative Duties /Assignments

  • Performs basic and general repair work on automobile and heavy equipment.
  • Determines the general condition of vehicles and equipment under the guidance of experienced mechanics.
  • Assists team members, when so instructed, with the repair of equipment.
  • Uses hand power tools and equipment such as power wrenches, grinders, torque wrenches, gauges, and diagnostic computers.
  • Checks the condition of and replaces all fluids, coolants, lubricants, belts and hoses as needed.
  • Applies basic knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a variety of automobiles, trucks and other heavy equipment.
  • Applies knowledge and skill in the use of shop tools such as impact wrenches, torque wrenches, gauges, micrometers, drum resurfacing machines, and electronic test equipment.
  • Keeps records of repair service; researches technical bulletins and equipment repair literature; follows oral and written instruction accurately and timely.
  • Examines work areas for cleanliness and safety and reports any deficiencies to supervisory or quality control personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

High School graduate or equivalent and one year of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive or heavy equipment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

And

Must successfully complete one Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification within three years following the date of hire or selection.

Must provide adequate tools to perform mechanic's duties as required.

Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License. May be required to obtain and maintain a State of Florida Commercial Driver's License for the type of equipment operated within one year of date of hire.

Equipment Mechanic II

General Functions

Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy truck, construction trailers, fire truck and other emergency apparatus and heavy equipment.

This is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and hydraulic systems, light and heavy vehicles and equipment, buses, graders, power shovels, and other specialized equipment. Provides guidance and instruction to team members.

Work is performed with limited direction from the Foreman, Supervisor or Team Leader after receiving oral or work order instructions as to the nature of the work to be performed. Performance is evaluated through observation and review of repairs performed.

Representative Duties /Assignments

  • Performs complex mechanical tasks including major overhauls on gasoline or diesel engines, rebuilding differentials, transmissions, final drives, compressors, pumps, complex hydraulic systems and controls and major electrical repairs.
  • Performs general and major overhaul and repair work on automobiles, buses, light and heavy trucks, graders, mowers, backhoes, loaders, excavators, dozers, and other fire apparatus.
  • Determines the general condition of vehicles and equipment, nature of malfunctions, and the extent of needed repairs using equipment such as aligning machines, test equipment, gauges, and diagnostic computers.
  • Performs major undercarriage, drive train, hydraulic, and systems repairs to all types of construction and heavy equipment and fire apparatus.
  • Repairs equipment by removing, disassembling, repairing, re-assembling and replacing parts and components.
  • Uses hand and power tools such as grinders, impact wrenches, torque wrenches, lifts, pulleys, and other power tools.
  • Examines work areas for cleanliness and safety and reports any deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Checks the condition of and replaces all fluids, coolants, lubricants, belts and hoses as needed.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Applies knowledge and skill in the use of shop tools such as wrenches, impact wrenches, micrometers, gauges, testers, drum resurfacing machines, and grinders.
  • Diagnoses the malfunction of gasoline, diesel and hydraulic equipment systems; detects worn or broken parts; repairs and adjusts parts and assemblies.
  • Provides guidance to team members; Keeps records of repair service; researches technical bulletins and equipment repair literature; follows oral and written instruction accurately and timely.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

High School graduate or equivalent and four years experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and/or heavy equipment. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

And

Must have successfully completed two Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification within three years of hire or selection.;

Must provide adequate tools to perform mechanic's duties as required.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License. May be required to obtain and maintain a State of Florida Commercial Driver's License for the type of equipment operated within one year of date of hire.

Preferences

Associate's degree from an accredited institution in automotive or diesel mechanics.

Recognized certifications such as Automotive Dealership certifications or possess a competency certification in a related field (diagnostics, automotive or diesel mechanics, fuel system, hydraulic systems).

Equipment Mechanic III

General Functions

Performs highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, fire apparatus and other heavy equipment.

This is highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of mechanical, hydraulic systems, and the electrical systems of light and heavy duty vehicles and equipment. Provides guidance to other mechanics and assists with the diagnosis of the more difficult repair work.

Work is performed with independent judgement and limited direction from the Foreman, Team Lead or Supervisor after receiving oral or work order instructions on the work to be performed. Performance is evaluated based on the guidance provided to team members, demonstrated mechanical skills and achievement of desired results.

Representative Duties/Assignments

  • Provides technical and functional guidance and assists team members with complex repair assignments; offers suggestions as to repair methods and specialized tools; guides employees to proper service and technical bulletins.
  • Uses all hand, power and diagnostic tools and machines and may guide others in their use. May design and fabricate tools and equipment for specialized repair uses.
  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Applies knowledge and skill in the use of all hand and shop tools, including computerized and electronic testing and hydraulic testing equipment.
  • Diagnoses simple to complex malfunction of gasoline, diesel and hydraulic equipment systems; detects worn or broken parts and repairs and adjusts parts and assemblies.
  • Keeps records of repair service; researches technical bulletins and equipment repair literature; and follows oral and written instructions accurately and timely.
  • Examines work areas for cleanliness and safety and reports any deficiencies to supervisory or quality control personnel.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all fire department vehicles, including but not limited to: repair and replacement of clutch, rear differential, rear drive axles and wheel bearings
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

High School graduate or equivalent and six years experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy equipment, and/or fire apparatus. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

And

Must have successfully completed two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications and obtain a third (3) ASE or EVT certification within two (2) years of hire or selection.

Must provide adequate tools to perform mechanic's duties as required.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License. May be required to obtain and maintain a State of Florida Commercial Driver's License for the type of equipment operated within one year of date of hire.

Preferences

Associate's degree from an accredited institution in automotive or diesel mechanics.

Recognized certifications such as Automotive Dealership certifications or possess a competency certification in a related field (diagnostics, automotive or diesel mechanics, fuel system, hydraulic systems).
