What are the responsibilities and job description for the Temporary Senior Camp Counselor position at Orange County Government?
The Senior Camp Counselor position is a temporary/seasonal position with the Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation (DEAPR). The maximum hours per week will be 40. The majority of employees will work between 22.5 to 35 hours per week based on the applicants knowledge and experience related to each specific camp. The camp weeks runs Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00 am and 6:00 pm. The position is under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager.
This position may require the ability to drive a vehicle. With this requirement you will be required to complete a Pre-Employment drug test.

Plans and executes age-appropriate activities for summer camp participants ages 4 - 12. These activities may include, but are not limited to: quiet games, group activities, arts and crafts, and science activities, Lego building activities and cooking. Leads group of campers ages 4 – 12 through sports specific drills and activities. Observes and promotes all rules and regulations established for DEAPR - Recreation Division Summer Camps.
Senior Counselors are required to take daily attendance, maintain daily attendance records, complete accident and incident reports when necessary and inform their supervisor of any issues or concerns that may require immediate attention.
Are required to function as the lead counselor in assigned camp. Duties as lead counselor will include but are not limited to: daily responsibility of two-way radio communication system, setting up activities prior to camp day, instructing junior counselors through activities.
Responsible for maintaining the camp binder and for direct communication with parents and legal guardians of campers.
Administers first aid according to prescribed procedures, and notifies emergency medical personnel when necessary.
Actively ensures the safety of all campers at all times.
Supervises and escorts campers during camp activities.
Instructs and interacts with campers during all activities.
Monitors and ensures appropriate camper behavior and reports problems to Camp Coordinators.
Works closely, cooperatively and amicably with all staff members.
Communicates in a positive manner with reinforced feedback to participants and parents/guardians.
Supervision
Work under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager and direction of the Recreation Summer Camp Coordinators. Assignments are provided by defining objectives, priorities, and deadlines. Additional assistance is provided for unusual situations that do not have clear precedents. Position may serve as a lead worker.Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Maintain the program spaces and all associated equipment/supplies.
Working knowledge of the concepts in science, cooking, Lego, athletics, and arts and crafts.
The position requires previous experience in kitchen work, particular interest in food preparation, creativity, organization, willingness to learn, willingness to help as needed, and a demonstrated ability to help establish and maintain a cohesive work environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants are required to have (3) years’ experience working as a camp counselor at another agency or one (1) year or more experience working as a camp counselor for Orange County Recreation.
American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR Certification. Class to be offered by DEAPR prior to the start date.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a license valid in the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.Physical Activities
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions including: standing, walking, talking, repetitive motions of hands/wrists and feet, grasping, hearing, handing and reaching.
Examples of physical activities required in this position:
Setting up recreation activities
Leading groups of campers ages 4 - 12
Possible Hazards (chemicals, dangerous machinery, etc.)
Work includes both indoor and outdoor activity during the summer months.
