What are the responsibilities and job description for the College Intern - Visual Communications, Internal Communications position at Orange County Transportation Authority?
OCTA's College Intern Program is a year-round paid student/intern program. You will gain real world work experience on meaningful projects under the guidance of a transportation professional. You will have the opportunity to use problem solving, communication and decision-making skills as you gain valuable work experience. You will also work with a mentor and benefit from career counseling.
As a College Intern, you will be exposed to OCTA's career opportunities in the transportation industry. You will gain deeper awareness of transportation's many facets through your OCTA orientation, projects and teams, and internal networking.
Under direct supervision, you will perform a variety of professional entry-level duties related to your major field of study and the sponsoring department's current business operations.
The pay range is from $19.00 - $22.00 per hour depending on your education level. This position is not eligible for employee benefits. The work schedule will consist of approximately 20 hours a week, not to exceed 1,000 hours within a continuous 12 month period.
Eligibility list may be established up to 6 months from the posting date.
The position will remain open until a candidate is selected.
Responsibilities

- Support the internal communications function in myriad ways through photography, graphic design, video and copy writing assignments.
- Design flyers, digital signage and other internal marketing materials as needed for internal communications.
- Write, proofread and edit communications in support of division/department projects and initiatives, as requested, including articles, email announcements, presentations and internal marketing copy.
- Ensure conformance to OCTA writing standards; ensuring correct spelling and use of punctuation, grammar, AP style and agency branding (OCTA Style Guidelines).
- Develop and update intranet content as needed, within specified timeframes, using a content management system or through a workflow process. Obtain content approval, as needed; make edits as necessary. Help generate social content on the homepage.
- Test or proofread materials to ensure they display correctly and web links work.
- Perform other tasks as assigned, including graphics/design/formatting and photo taking of featured employees.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Currently a full-time college student enrolled in a two-year or four-year college program and following a course of study leading to a Bachelor's or Master's degree, with emphasis in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or Graphic Design.
- Must be a full-time student maintaining a 2.5 GPA.
- Intern must conduct themselves in a professional manner.
Knowledge of:
- Microsoft Office Suite.
- Adobe Suite (Illustrator and PhotoShop), Canva.
- SharePoint sites, content management tools.
- Photography and video editing tools.
Ability to:
- Independently create content with minimal edits, using good grammar/writing/communication skills.
- Display team cohesiveness with others divisions or departments, using good teamwork and collaboration skills.
Understand what is valued by the client by being customer focused. - Demonstrate agility in shifting assignments and tasks.
- Show a sharp attention to details and follow-through on quality control measures.
- Communicate effectively in person, virtually, visually, and in writing.
- Speak up, ask questions for clarification, and use good judgment to offer solutions and to complete tasks correctly.
