General Description: The purpose of this job is to attend to the animals in the County Shelter. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, bedding and general housekeeping. Administer medications when directed.Duties and Responsibilities: The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.• Cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, carriers, and stalls.• Picks up and washes feed pans, water bowls and buckets.• Walk and exercise animals.• Feeds animals on a regular schedule; maintains ample fresh water supply.• Observes the general health conditions of animals; reports symptoms of common animal diseases.• Makes routine inspection of all cages for the safety of the animals.• Assists intake of animals into facility and routes them to the proper area.• Performs other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.Requires six (6) months experience in the care and handling of animals in a personal or work capacity; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.Physical Demands: Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, dancing, stretching, or lifting all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): • Involves routine and frequent exposure to: Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.Extreme noise levels, Animals,Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.Traffic; Moving machinery.Electrical shock; Heights.Disease/pathogens.Toxic/caustic chemicals; Explosives; Violence.Other extreme hazards not listed above.Special Certifications and Licenses: • None.Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance: Orangeburg County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
