Job Summary
Orbital is seeking a Relay Technician to assist the Start-Up Coordinator/P&C Lead in overall technical oversight and documentation requirements such as work plans, isolation plans and functional test plans. Assist Start-up Coordinator with documentation submittal and completion/turnover of project reports. Actively involved during complete testing & final checkout with Start-Up Coordinator & Commissioning Engineer. Organize prints and maintain an accurate and well-ordered file system. Maintain clean and organized work environment. Assist with all physical activities on site. This individual should reside in or be willing to travel throughout the NORTHEAST UNITED STATES in order to support client projects. This position may be filled at the Technician or Lead level, depending on experience. Travel and living allowances will be provided for candidate who do not reside locally.
Other Duties include all Protective Relay testing and Power Meter testing using applicable device software, settings file uploading and downloading, recording test results, and manual relay setting adjustments and verifications of various electro-mechanical relays and meters. Assist Start-Up Coordinator/ Commissioning Engineer with Technical job functions such as Current/Voltage Loop Checks, Relay Panel Point-To-Point Wiring Checks, Functional Checks, Alarm Verifications, and other testing involved in the full checkout of substation control systems. Duties also include setup/coordination of SCADA, station annunciator and substation network communication devices. Assists with documentation, bar-coding, equipment lists, and other similar device documentation.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assist with field control cable and wiring verification (continuity and Megger tests).
- Assist with point-to-point wiring checks
- Utilize clients’ Inventory Management System documents (Barcoding, CIP lists, Equipment Energization lists)
- Apply Human Performance Tools in and around the work zone such as
- barricades, flagging, isolation devices, Lock out/Tag out, and other such Human Performance mitigation devices.
- Assist with the creation of the Daily Safety Tailboards (JHA’s)
- Assist with daily battery & charger measurements and battery ground test
- Assist with the creation of detailed daily reports and submittals
- Assist with verifying panels and devices are correctly shipped
- Assist with Drawing As-Builts with supervision from P&C lead and/or Startup Coordinator
Minimum Qualifications
- 1 years of experience in substation maintenance, construction, or design working with protection and control equipment
- CPR certification or ability to become certified.
- Must be able to recognize an electrically safe work condition (ESWC).
- Must have basic knowledge in Mathematics, Metric Units and conversions.
- Must be familiar with basic tools and equipment to perform work such as insulated screwdrivers, fuse puller, appropriate multi-meter, etc.
- Must have knowledge of basic electrical terms and definitions and ability to understand electrical drawings.
- Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and complete a satisfactory background check, both pre-employment and ongoing
- Able to work overtime and travel frequently to various client sites for periods of time
- Able to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, able to lift 70 lbs
- Must have a valid driver's license with clean record
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- This position requires the ability to pass a post-offer drug (including marijuana) and alcohol test in compliance with Federal regulations and is also subject to random testing as a condition of continued employment.

- Associate’s or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent
