2025 Executive Director Search
2025 Executive Director Search Orcas Center is seeking a dynamic Executive Director who will lead the Center into the next chapter of growth and impact. Orcas Center is the premier performing and visual arts venue located on Orcas Island. It has been an integral part of the arts community on the island for almost 40 years. Orcas Center is an arts organization dedicated to theater, music, dance and the visual arts through performances, classes, outreach programs, gallery exhibitions and events. It is a community-based organization whose goal is to ensure access to the arts for all ages and cultural interests. The Executive Director of Orcas Center will be a person who has a background in the arts, strong leadership, vision, administrative and management skills and the qualities of accessibility, openness, and community involvement to represent the Center. Orcas Center is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.
Summary of Duties
The Executive Director is responsible for the administration of all activities including financial management, donor development and fundraising, staff and volunteer supervision for a diverse range of performance styles and audiences, facility management and public relations. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Trustees, and is responsible for the organization’s achievement of its mission, programs and financial objectives, as well as its adherence to its core principles. Salary range is $90,000 - $105,000 and includes health care and retirement benefits.

Key Responsibilities
Administration and Finance
- Works with the Board and staff to lead Orcas Center in setting overall direction and priorities, and develop and implement programmatic and organizational strategies, policies, and goals.
- Leads the organization’s financial management, human resources, administration, and operations; develops budgets and reporting standards; works with staff to maintain the organization’sfinancial and administrative well-being.
- In partnership with Board and staff, establish and implement fundraising goals; use staff’s and Boardmembers’ talents, resources, and ideas to enhance fundraising activities; enhances Board members’ ability to identify fundraising opportunities and encourage their ongoing participation as donors and solicitors.
- Ensures that sound financial, operational, and administrative policies and controls are in place and that funds are spent wisely.
- Ensures insurance policies are reviewed & renewed annually (D&O, liability, health, etc.).
- Ensures accurate completion of legal & IRS documents, including 990, annual registration, etc. Facilities * Ensures that the building is maintained.
- Develops and maintains an annual maintenance and repair plan and a 10-year maintenance and repair plan. * Makes capital improvement recommendations based on the 10-year repair plan.
- Secures funding for capital improvements through grants and fundraising.
Staffing and Volunteers
- Ensures internal communication and coordination among staff; evaluates staff performance; and recruits new staff when appropriate.
- Initiates and updates HR manual in conjunction with the Board.
- Distributes HR manual to all staff.
- Ensures that all staff & volunteers have completed required paperwork and are aware of and follow Orcas Center policies.
- Creates and revises policies in conjunction with the Board of Trustees as needed. Ensures annual completion of confidentiality and conflict of interest agreement by all staff, Board & volunteers.
- Regularly reviews and manages staff who report to ED and makes certain all staff receive regular reviews.
- Vets and manages any outside agencies contracting with Orcas Center.
- Ensures that all Independent Contractors have appropriate paperwork and contracts
Programming
- Ensures through effective supervision that day-to-day operations and programs are professionally and efficiently organized and administered.
- Works in collaboration with Artistic Director(s).
- Approves all programming selections balancing public support and artistic breadth.
- Ensures quality, effectiveness, and impact of Orcas Center programs.
- Advocates to the community and beyond about the importance of Arts programming.
- Works with community partners to collaborate and maintain strong relationships throughout the community.
Board
- Keeps the Board informed of operational goals and programs, staff, finances and funding developments
- Attends all Board meetings and regularly briefs the Board on the status of the organization in writing and verbally.
- Remains actively in touch with and well-informed about the Board’s activities.
- Provides information to help the Board formulate effective policies.
- Serves on all committees.
- Maintains on going communications with the Board.
- Ensures the organization and Board of Trustees is following best practices for non-profit operations, including having correct policies and procedures in place.
- Ensures that the board has the training to be an effective and high functioning non-profit board.
Fundraising and Community Engagement
- Represents Orcas Center in public speaking roles.
- Develops and executes annual fundraising calendar with the Director of Development.
- Builds and maintains relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization.
- Reports to the board on fundraising activities and contributions.
- Monitors and evaluates fundraising activities to ensure annual fundraising goals are being achieved.
- Fosters a culture of gratitude and inclusion within the organization.
- Works with community partners to collaborate and maintain strong relationships throughout the community.
- Identifies and writes grants for general operations and special projects.
