What are the responsibilities and job description for the Buildings and Grounds Steward position at Orchard Valley Waldorf School?
The Orchard Valley Waldorf School is seeking a Buildings and Grounds Steward to engage in buildings and grounds maintenance, repair, and project planning responsibilities.
Ideal candidates will have experience in carpentry, general construction, understanding of electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems and experience with commercial building regulations (lead laws, building code, fire safety, zoning, Act 250 etc). Candidates must have a desire to work with a team of seasoned educators and administrators focused on the health of our students, faculty, school buildings and land.
Responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to):
- Perform maintenance and repair on buildings
- Coordinate with Branch Administrators to meet facilities requests from faculty.
- Manage and organize documentation of activity & facilities data including incoming reports, estimates, invoices, certificates of insurance, W 9 forms, COI forms, blueprints and plans
- Support the Administration and Board with Master Site plan, current and future space needs, and evolving development of our buildings and grounds
- Manage facilities budget in coordination with Admin Director
- Operate TARM heating system in Grace Farm grades building
- Manage all heating, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and septic systems
- Support the cleanliness of the buildings and grounds
- Attend weekly Staff meetings and other meetings as needed
- Member of the Buildings and Grounds committee of volunteers from the school community
- Member of Farm committee to support evolving needs of farm infrastructure
- Coordinate volunteers to assist with projects
- Organize and host Community Work Days at each campus
- Coordinate with subcontractors for plowing, mowing, water system and annual systems inspections/maintenance
- Monthly reports to staff and Board of Trustees
- Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies including but not limited to:
- DCF Child Development Division Regulated Child Care licensing
- Agency of Education
- Building Code
- Department of Public Safety
- ACT 250
- Local Zoning
- Lead Safety
- Agency of Transportation
- Manage tools and equipment
- Point of contact for regulatory agencies
- Act as an ambassador of our school presenting yourself in a professional manner at all times
Orchard Valley Waldorf School is a vibrant, rural school set on two beautiful campuses in the heart of Vermont, with close proximity to Montpelier, Vermont’s capital. It's a small town with big city amenities - a lively arts and music scene, great restaurants, and an active outdoor community.

We provide education and care for children from infancy through Grade 8 and anticipate 120 students in our programs for the 2025-2026 school year- which include three Infant-3 year old classrooms, two Pre-K classrooms, one Kindergarten and fixed combined Grades classes: ½, ¾, ⅚, and ⅞.

Orchard Valley Waldorf School is an AWSNA Associate member and WECAN member school. Our birth through PreK programs are Vermont DCF Child Development Division Center Based Child Care Programs. Orchard Valley Waldorf School is an Approved Independent School and Pre Qualified Preschool program by the Vermont Agency of Education.
- Experience in carpentry, maintenance and/or general contracting
- Experience in the operations and management of commercial buildings and property
- Good written and interpersonal communication skills
- Understanding of plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, TARM system and Pellet system.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, walk over uneven terrain, lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, and climb ladders
This is a full time salaried position but part time could be considered for the right candidate.
- Benefits include 2 weeks PTO, 2 weeks vacation after first year of employment, Wellness Stipend, tuition remission, reduced hours (50%) from January 1st through February 28th.
- Salary range is: $41k-$47k dependent on education, training and experience
