Position Summary

The Oregon City High School Head Custodian is responsible for leading the custodial staff at Oregon City High School, maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the school building and grounds, and performing routine maintenance and repair tasks. The employee in this position serves as the lead daytime custodian and works closely with OCHS administrators, the Head Night Custodian, and the maintenance department to ensure that the school facilities are well-maintained.

This classification is distinguished from lower ranges by the greater emphasis on leadership and routine maintenance responsibilities, and the degree of independence which requires incumbents to meet the requirements of administrators and teachers while ensuring the timely completion of schedules.

Essential Functions

  • Confer with school administration or teachers regarding the care and cleaning of school facilities.
  • Lead and coordinate the work of custodial staff, in collaboration with supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain cleaning schedules;
  • Personally perform custodial duties and assist others in completing work properly and in a timely manner;
  • Instruct and train other custodial staff;
  • Inspect work to ensure it is done in accordance with instructions;
  • Oversee the work of substitute custodians.
  • Collaborate with the Head Night Custodian to maintain cleaning schedules and support the work of night custodians.
  • Perform needed routine maintenance and minor plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs as needed. Report major repair or maintenance work to supervisor and put in work orders to the Maintenance Department.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance Department staff to support contractors at OCHS (scheduling, building access, etc).
  • Learn and manage online software for building infrastructure (HVAC, lighting), including scheduling, changing filters, and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Inspect buildings regularly for sanitary and safety hazards, vandalism, and fires. Make reports and notify appropriate authorities.
  • Requisition custodial supplies and equipment, order fuel, oil, and other supplies as needed. Maintain basic records as directed.
  • Coordinate and participate in the complete cleaning of buildings during vacation periods. Collaborate with the Maintenance Department around repairs or maintenance needs during breaks.
  • Ensure that buildings are properly secured.
  • Available when necessary for alarm calls on evenings and weekends.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean, and efficient fashion.
  • Knowledge of the procedures and techniques for making routine electrical, plumbing, and mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to coordinate activities, assign work, and instruct other staff in proper custodial procedures.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor involving the movement of cleaning equipment and furnishings.
  • Ability to exercise some independent judgment while adhering to prescribed policies and procedures and perform the essential functions of the position with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships and work in partnership with supervisors, other staff, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions and apply them to the efficient and timely completion of work.
  • Knowledge of computer systems (google suite : gmail, docs, sheets)
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate through speech and writing.
  • Ability to proficiently read and follow instructions, messages, and building communications.
  • Ability to work effectively, interact with, and respond to people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism in dress, speech and manner appropriate to the assignment and work setting.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to follow district policies and procedures at all times.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Two years of custodial experience in an education setting or similarly complex environment.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may substitute for the above.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of modern cleaning methods and skill in the use of cleaning materials, equipment, and tools required for routine maintenance work.
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check, as required by law.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of custodial experience in an education setting or similarly complex environment.
  • Experience leading, organizing, or mentoring others in a work environment.
  • NUMBER OF HOURS PER DAY : 8.0 HOURS PER DAY

    NUMBER OF DAYS WORKED PER SCHOOL YEAR : 260 DAYS PER YEAR

    HOURLY RATE OF PAY : $27.16 - $38.22 PER HOUR (RANGE 17)
