POSITION SUMMARY
The assistant aquarist works alongside professional aquarists to provide animal care, system maintenance, and facilities management for the Aquarium Science Building. The Director and staff will assist and assign the work to the assistant aquarist. This position will be focused on the disassembly and moving of animal systems in the Aquarium Science Building in preparation for construction projects in Summer 2025.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure that animal safety is maintained during disassembly and movement of equipment.
- Complete aquarium system maintenance as instructed.
- General building maintenance tasks may also be assigned to the student in this position.
- Work on special projects related to upcoming construction projects in summer 2025
- Work involves frequently lifting 50 pounds, working safely with tools, safely moving about in wet areas, and using digital devices to record observations and tasks.

Requirements:QUALIFICATIONS:Required
- Currently enrolled in the Aquarium Science Program at Oregon Coast Community College.
- Knowledge of life support principles for recirculating aquatic systems
- Experience with plumbing related tasks and tools.
- Successful criminal background check.
Preferred:
- A second language is helpful (Spanish) but is not required
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee must dress and maintain self in a professional manner appropriate to work environment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands, handle or operate hand tools, power tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms, bend, twist, crawl, climb, kneel and work while being wet.
The work environment requires working in cramped work spaces and getting into awkward positions that may or may not be well lighted; exposure to moderate to loud noise, cold, wet or humid environments, hazardous equipment, animals, chemicals and materials.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
Schedule may require occasional early morning or evening work. Travel between College and other locations may be required as needed. Occasional travel and overnight stays may be required for training and other purposes.
