Are you ready to step into a leadership role and take on greater responsibility in maintaining safety, security, and professional development within the facility? We are seeking dedicated and experienced candidates for the position of Correctional Sergeant. We are looking to fill multiple permanent positions.

This is an excellent opportunity for career advancement while playing a crucial role in maintaining security, overseeing staff, and guiding Adults in Custody (AICs) toward rehabilitation.

About The Job – Your Role

As a Correctional Sergeant, you will be a senior security staff member responsible for overseeing custody, control, supervision, and daily care of AICs while upholding the mission of the Department. You will serve as a lead worker, ensuring facility operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently. You will supervise AICs during movement assignments, monitor high-security areas, and conduct security operations such as transports, searches, and emergency response.

In this role, you will also play a key part in staff development, assisting in training and potentially mentoring subordinate staff as a Field Training Officer (FTO). You will lead by example, modeling professionalism, accountability, and behaviors that support rehabilitation efforts.

This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience in a correctional security setting where your primary duties were the care and custody of AICs;
  • Be able to obtain, within two weeks, an Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Correctional Certificate OR a Correctional Certificate from another government agency;
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED certificate;
  • Be 21 years of age or older;
  • United States Citizen.

Education will not be accepted as a substitute for the required experience.

Special Qualifications

Ability to obtain a valid Oregon motor vehicle operator's license.

  • Leadership & Supervision – The ability to manage and guide correctional officers, ensuring proper enforcement of rules and procedures while maintaining order within the facility.
  • Crisis Management & Conflict Resolution – Strong skills in handling high-stress situations, de-escalating conflicts, and making quick, sound decisions under pressure.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills – The ability to effectively communicate with staff, AICs and other stakeholders, both verbally and in writing, while maintaining professionalism.
  • Policy Enforcement & Security Procedures – A thorough understanding of correctional policies, laws, and regulations, along with the ability to enforce them fairly and consistently.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving – The ability to assess situations quickly, identify potential security risks, and implement appropriate solutions to maintain safety and order.

Working Conditions

Constant exposure to adult male and female AICs within a prison setting. Exposure to emotionally and mentally unstable and deviant behaviors within the work environment on an ongoing basis. Rotating shifts/positions of a 7 day/24 hour operation. Mandatory overtime. Participation on riot squads or tactical teams. Searches of unclothed AICs. Collecting urine samples. Some travel and hospital supervision. Perform continuous physical activity which may include bending and standing for prolonged periods

The salary range listed above is for non-PERS qualifying applicants. PERS qualifying applicants may be eligible for an adjusted range to reflect an additional 6.95%.

About The Process – What To Expect

Requirements For Employment

The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
