The Deer Ridge Correctional Institution is seeking a Corrections Recreation Specialist 2 to create, coordinate, and supervise meaningful recreational activities within a secured facility.
Candidates who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Recreation Specialist 2 may be considered as an underfill in the Recreation Specialist 1 classification. An underfill must meet the minimum qualifications for the lower classification and would receive the pay in accordance with the lower classifications salary range until they meet the minimum qualification for the full position. At that time, the successful candidate would be moved to the higher classification and salary range.
The salary range for the underfill is: $4,653 – $5,849
Preference may be given to candidates who can meet the full qualifications.
About The Job – Your Role
As a Corrections Recreation Specialist 2, you will create, coordinate, and supervise a variety of structured recreational activities. Programs may include music, cultural events, wellness initiatives, and art projects. You will be providing a high level of customer service, streamlining any and all processes associated with running a revenue generating business including hiring, training, holding adults in custody (AICs) accountable for misuse of equipment, reinforcing positive behavior change, and terminating of its workers.
In this role, you will work closely with security and transition staff to ensure activities align with ODOC policies, security measures, and the Oregon Accountability Model while providing AICs with pro-social opportunities to foster personal development. Additionally, you will monitor program effectiveness and make adjustments as needed to enhance engagement and rehabilitation.
For this position, training, work hours, breaks, days off, etc. will be determined by the labor contract of the institution. Once the probationary period is completed, work shifts and days off may be subject to a bid process in accordance with the applicable labor contract.
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
Minimum Qualifications – Corrections Recreation Specialist 2
Monthly Salary Range: $5,105 – $6,023
Three years of experience assessing, developing, coordinating, and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities;
OR
A Bachelor's degree in Recreational Management, Physical Education or a related field

Monthly Salary Range: $4,653 – $5,849
One year of experience assessing, developing, coordinating and implementing recreational programs and leisure time activities.
OR
34-quarter hours (21 semester hours) in Recreation or Physical Education or related coursework will substitute for the experience.

Institutions are exposed to temperature extremes and inclement weather. The incumbent may be required to perform duties outside in the inclement weather and temperature extremes. Walking long distances to get to the workstation or to perform work will be required. Most adult in custody housing units are two levels requiring the use of stairs to reach the second level.
All employees are required to use a computer for E-Mail, word processing and related adult in custody information systems in the regular performance of their duties.
All employees shall interact with co-workers, AICs and the public in a professional, respectful manner. This includes refraining from any type of behavior, action or language that could be perceived as hostile, discriminatory, intimidating, violent or abusive.
