The Office of Inspector General is actively seeking to fill a job rotation as a Department of Corrections Inspector 3 in the Professional Standards Unit.
This position is a job rotation anticipated to last 12 months, though may be extended or decreased due to business need. This rotation is available for current, regular status employees (temporary and contract employees excluded) of the Oregon Department of Corrections, Oregon Corrections Enterprises, or Oregon Board of Parole, Probation, and Post-Prison Supervision with their current manager's approval. The hiring manager for this position is Assistant Inspector General Bonny McCoy.
This position is approved for hybrid work but will be required to travel to other facilities.
About The Job – Your Role
This position reflects the highest level of investigative knowledge and experience regarding internal workplace and misconduct investigations. The incumbent gathers and analyzes information for administrative or criminal proceedings, prepares comprehensive reports, and provides consultation and oversight to senior management. Responsibilities include collaborating with law enforcement agencies and contributing to policy and procedural improvements.
This position is management services and may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of full-time investigative experience that included fact finding; collecting and preserving evidence according to the rules of evidence; examining records; locating and interviewing witnesses to verify or disprove claims of suspected law violations.
OR
Four years of experience in a correctional institution that included interviewing adults in custody to gather facts, collect evidence, do searches and document violations of administrative or criminal regulations for the purpose of disciplinary action.
Preference will be given to those currently in a management service position.

This position primarily serves correctional institutions located throughout Oregon and may be housed in a correctional institution. There is an inherent responsibility to support correctional security staff during periods of AIC unrest. The incumbent of this position is subject to call back in the event of an emergency or work stoppage and is subject to assignment in any area of the institution. Possible encounters with abusive and/or hostile AIC pose a risk to physical injury. Employee is responsible for sound security practices, ensuring the prevention of escape from confinement by properly exercising control over AICs, keys, tools, contraband and may be called to respond to emergency situations.
Investigators are required to travel frequently to Oregon correctional institutions and facilities spread across the state, sometimes on very short notice (or immediately). Frequent long hours and overnight travel may be required. Incumbent must have a valid driver’s license.

- Must have a valid driver's license and the ability for overnight travel.
- Knowledge of Laws, rules and regulations, and standards applicable to the confinement of individuals in the State of Oregon
- Correctional institution operating procedures
- Rules of evidence, including legal sources of obtaining information, chain of custody, and legal sufficiency of evidence
- Experience gathering preliminary information for allegations related to employment issues, misconduct, and criminal activities
- Reviewing reported misconduct to identify any safety risks
- Advanced investigative skills and proficiency in conducting fair, objective investigations in compliance with laws, policies, and labor agreements
- Managing and coordinating multiple caseloads simultaneously
- Interviewing and questioning witnesses and subjects to obtain information
- Preparing investigative reports
- Analyzing conflicting allegations, testimony, and documentary records
- Experience clearly explaining information, using appropriate language, and actively listening to concerns
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with staff, AICs, and external law enforcement agencies
