We are seeking a Computer Science Education Specialist to join our Office of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment at the
Oregon Department of Education
. This is a Limited Duration position represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU).This role is a hybrid of remote work and will need to report to the office when business or operational needs are dependent on onsite activities. Remote work is embraced to the fullest extent possible without interfering with business.
This is a Limited Duration position, subject to end in September 30, 2025. Current State of Oregon Employees are eligible to apply as a job rotation. As the Computer Science Education Specialist, you will lead collaborative efforts with school districts, other public agencies, and community and business partners to leverage resources to support student access to and engagement in computer science courses. You will also coordinate ODE’s administration of the statewide computer science implementation plan. In this role, you will have opportunities to provide technical assistance and professional learning to educators in schools, school districts, Education Service Districts (ESDs), public charter schools, and private schools, as well as community and industry partners in order to meet the needs of students across Oregon.
Typical duties include:
- Leading the implementation of a statewide plan and program for expanding equitable student access to computer science courses and make recommendations on the allocation of funding provided for priority computer science strategies.
- Providing technical support and training to educators, administrators, and other LEA staff in the area of computer science and develop guidance, tools, and other formal and informal resources on best instructional practices in response to LEA, community, and student needs. This includes developing resources that are culturally responsive and inclusive of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and racial and/or ethnic identities.
- Partnering with content area specialists, directors and other leadership within ODE and with external education experts at the local, state, and national level to ensure that current research, evidence, community experiences, and student voice informs ODE policies, programs, and recommendations in the area of computer science and improve equitable and culturally responsive computer science curriculum and instruction.
- Building partnerships to leverage available resources, including federal funding, for expanding school-wide and district-wide capacity to improve instruction in the area of computer science.
- Analyzing proposed legislation pertaining to computer science education for potential problems or advantages, and ensure that documentation is in place to support conclusions. Develop budget and fiscal impact statements to support computer science program strategies.

Minimum Qualifications (Need to Have)
Master's degree in Education or related field from an accredited college or university and five years of education experience in the specialty area under recruitment (e.g., classroom teacher, counselor, itinerant service provider), two years of which includes leadership experience (e.g., lead teacher, program coordinator or director, school administrator) in the specialty area under recruitment.
A Doctorate in Education or related field from an accredited university may substitute for two years of the education experience, but not for the two years of leadership experience.
An Oregon Standard Administrative License (issued by Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission) may substitute for the two years of leadership experience.
Minimum qualifications must be met to qualify for this position.
Desired Attributes (Nice to Have):
- Expertise in teaching, leading, and/or researching computer science education, with experience in Oregon context.
- Strong communication skills, including speaking, writing, and presenting.
- Strong organization and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities; work with multiple deadlines, continual change, and at times heavy workloads; and pivot between competing priorities (including many same-day requests) and situations with ease and grace.
- Experience with Generative AI tools and their potential impacts on the future of computer science education in an age of AI.
- Experience monitoring and evaluating grants and contracts.
- Experience coordinating and/or leading community and organizational partner engagement efforts.
- Experience providing advice or technical assistance to school districts, Tribes, community groups or public.
- Ability to establish effective relationships with culturally diverse partners and community groups representing a variety of perspectives and lived experiences.
