The primary mission of the Division of Oncological Sciences at OHSU's Knight Cancer Institute is to better understand cancer through basic, translational, and population-based research that improves cancer prevention, detection, and treatments for all. Our community of faculty, trainees, and staff brings together scientists from a broad range of disciplines and works collaboratively to advance innovation and translate discoveries from the lab into meaningful impacts for cancer patients and our community.

Function/Duties of Position

The research data analyst 3 applies extensive knowledge as a research professional with an in-depth understanding of statistical and/or other analysis techniques designed to support research projects of broad scope and complexity, and functions as a team lead. The incumbent is responsible for conducting advanced bioinformatic or statistical analyses utilizing R, Python, SAS, or other statistical software packages under the direction of the PI. This position is expected to be capable of proposing appropriate analytic strategies to be conducted with the approval of the PI.

 

The research data analyst 3 will manage and analyze data from large epidemiologic studies and consortia as well as design, develop, and deploy analytic macros to facilitate the research. This position will also analyze and utilize appropriate software methodologies for emerging ‘omic technologies, including multiplex tumor staining, metabolomics, proteomics, methylomics, and RNA sequencing data, with the goal of linking epidemiologic exposures to changes in the tumor and its associated microenvironment. They will work with internal and external collaborators to evaluate and benchmark new tools for high-dimensional data analysis as well as develop and apply novel analytic approaches to existing molecular epidemiology data.

 

Projects will be assigned by the PI, and are directly supervised by the PI, or direct collaborators of the PI.

2.Data Analysis:

  • Under minimal supervision of the PI, conducts high dimensional bioinformatic and statistical analyses requiring programming in R, Python, SAS, or some other relevant statistical software package. Analysis may include but is not limited to survival analysis, logistic regression, linear regression including beta-binomial models, and several types of systems/network analyses of ‘omics data. Performs bioinformatic data quality control prior to analysis implementation. Applies existing and novel techniques to link epidemiologic exposures to ‘omics data at the systemic or tumor tissue level, including metabolomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, genomics, or methylomics, among others, that aligns with the PI’s research interests. Capable of proposing appropriate analytic strategies to be conducted with the approval of the Pl.
  • Determine appropriate statistical methods to achieve project aims.
  • Assists in scientific interpretation and writing/reporting of research for publication.
  • Effectively communicates the results of analyses to researchers.

3.Data Visualization and Reporting:

  • Summarizes complex analyses in visual form that is interpretable by many levels of expertise, including clinicians.
  • Document all stages of data cleaning, analysis, and visualization with an eye toward reproducibility.

4.Data Digestion and Management:

  • Collects and manages laboratory, molecular, and clinical data. Develops or works within existing databases to harmonize data with oversight from the Pl.
  • Reviews data, ensuring accuracy and completeness of data.
  • Assures adherence to quality control standards established for data management.
  • Collects big data from multiple resources and determines appropriate merging procedures with existing analytic data.
  • Supports data harmonization activities for consortium-based studies.

5.Research Activities and Support:

  • Serves as contact for co-investigators and other research affiliates.
  • Performs literature and software tool searches. Reads, summarizes, and implements applicable relevant findings.
  • Under the direction of the PI, coordinates and develops correspondence and responses to various outside agencies regarding research activities.

6.Mentoring:

  • Mentors other junior staff in the department or within the research team.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • PhD in relevant field
  • OR Master’s Degree in a relevant field AND 4 years of relevant experience
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field AND 6 years of relevant experience
  • Experience programming in R, Python, SAS or other statistical packages
  • Experience analyzing epidemiologic data, such as data from observational cohort studies

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills:  both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Access, Word, and PowerPoint) on Window OS. Ability to accurately type 60wpm
  • Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person
  • Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, epidemiology, or another relevant field. 
  • Experience in high-performance computing in Unix environment
  • Experience analyzing high-throughput bioinformatic data, high-dimensional data wrangling and analysis techniques, and high-dimensional data visualization.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):

  • Working knowledge of Oracle.
