We find solutions for our area’s garbage and recycling that protect clean air and water; help plan land use and development to provide jobs and safe transportation; manage local venues that provide a connection to arts and culture and help keep the economy growing; protect 17,000 acres of parks and natural areas, and run the Oregon Zoo, to keep nature close to home. 
 
The Office of Metro Attorney provides legal advice to the Metro Council, Metro Chief Operating Officer, Metro Auditor, and departments. The Office of Metro Attorney consists of 11 attorneys, and six support staff dealing with a variety of legal issues in areas such as: land use planning, real estate, housing, construction, litigation, employment and labor, constitutional law, public finance, records and public meetings, contracts, administrative law, elections, and bond measures.

The Office of Metro Attorney is looking for summer law clerks to assist attorneys in the Office of Metro Attorney by providing legal services to the entire Metro organization. These legal services include research, evaluation, analysis, and advice on regional municipal law, including work related to urban and transportation planning, housing, solid waste and recycling, regional parks, labor and employment, and other matters.

Please note that our office does not do criminal law and that there is minimal litigation. A commitment of ten weeks during the summer is required.
 
As a summer law clerk, you will
  • Conduct legal research and analysis 
  • Draft legal memoranda and provide legal opinions and advice on regional municipal law, including work related to urban and transportation planning, housing, solid waste and recycling, regional parks, labor and employment, and other matters of municipal law
  • Assist in drafting municipal legislation and contracts
  • Assist in the preparation of pleadings in civil matters 
  • Attend meetings with clients

Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful completion of at least one year of classes at an accredited law school.

  • Must be currently enrolled in law school.

COMPENSATION, BENEFITS AND REPRESENTATION
Based on thOregon Pay Equity Act requirements and Metro’s internal equity review process, the appointment will likely be made at $24.00 per hour.
 
This position is eligible for overtime and is non-represented. It is classified as an Intern.

Hybrid Telework
At this time, this position is designated as “hybrid telework.” You will have the option to work away from the office, although you will be required to come into the office a minimum of three days a week for the first two weeks and a minimum of two days a week for the remaining eight weeks. The manager will work with you to identify a schedule that balances the operational needs of the department and your needs. Employees must reside in Oregon or Washington to work at Metro.
