Position Overview

The Phlebotomist supports patients by identifying the most effective methods for specimen collection. They are also responsible for preparing specimens for laboratory testing. At least one year of phlebotomy experience is required. This is a full-time position. Candidate will have their choice of 4 10 hour shifts or 5 8 hour shifts, Monday-Friday.
Essential Job Functions
- Verifies test requisitions; bringing discrepancies to the attention of ordering provider
- Verifies patient by reading patient identification
- Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, entering draw information into EMR and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
- Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
- Serves and protects the clinic by adhering to professional standards, laboratory policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and COLA standards
- Monitors supplies and puts away stock as needed
- Assists on the bone marrow collections
- Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly
- Ability to result waived laboratory testing on patient samples under the supervision of a technologist
- Performs all other duties assigned by supervisor
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED required
- Ability to connect with patients and make them feel comfortable
- Knowledge of legal requirements regarding drawing blood, handling fluid samples and use of relevant medical equipment and material.
- Phlebotomy training and knowledge of venipuncture techniques
- 1 year phlebotomy experience required
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years phlebotomy experience preferred
- ASCP certification required
