Essential Job Functions
This is a working Supervisor position that performs MLS functions and serves in a supervisory capacity. In coordination with and under the direction of the Clinic Manager, the Lab Supervisor will oversee the day-to-day activities of the OSG Lab Teams. The laboratory teams support our clinical care teams by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses on blood, body fluid and other specimen types in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry and Urinalysis. In addition, the Lab Supervisor will be actively involved in the hiring, training and development process for Medical Laboratory Scientist and Phlebotomists and assist in the development of policies and procedures specific to the practice.
Leadership (>50% of time)
- Provide day to day supervision to the Laboratory teams at multiple sites
- Provide oversight to all laboratory processes assisting with policies/procedures scheduling, daily operations
- Make personnel recommendations for Clinic Manager approval regarding hiring, discipline, termination, and development of laboratory staff
- Evaluate processes to make sure laboratory staff are accurately prepared and trained to ensure processes and regulatory guidelines are followed
- Schedule staff and ensure appropriate staffing coverage for all sites; adjust schedules as needed when employees are out on vacation or out sick
- Assist in the maintenance, development and management of department policies and procedures
- Monitor the workflow to track the timeliness of completion and efficiency of all tasks.
- Train, Mentor, coach, and develop all laboratory staff
- Review infusion schedules in collaboration with the Charge Nurse to identify diagnosis trends impacting medication and chemotherapy procurement and inventory management
- Act as point person for all laboratory audits and regulatory requirements
Medical Laboratory Scientist (<50% of time)
- Perform Diagnostic Tests: MLS conduct a variety of diagnostic tests on patient samples, including blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids. Tests may include hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, blood banking, and molecular biology
- Process Specimens: They ensure proper specimen collection, labeling, and processing before performing tests. This includes preparing slides, centrifuging samples, or using automated machines for analysis
- Analyze Results: Interpreting test results, identifying abnormalities, and ensuring accuracy. MLS identify potential errors in results and take corrective actions as necessary
- Run Instrumentation: Using complex laboratory equipment such as microscopes, automated analyzers, and centrifuges to conduct tests accurately
- Maintain Standards: Adhering to regulatory guidelines such as those set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and Commission of Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Science required
- MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP) OR MLT (ASCP), AMT or equivalent current certification required
- Must have experience in chemistry and hematology
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a supervisory or preparatory (i.e. Lead) supervisory role
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with instrumentation and software: Sysmex, OCD Vitros and Orchard Harvest LIS
- Phlebotomy experience
