What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Laboratory Scientist position at Oregon Specialty Group?
The Medical Laboratory Scientist provides information for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease by conducting medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses on blood, body fluid and other specimen types in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry and Urinalysis. The position requires monitoring and interpretation of all quality control systems, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
Essential Job Functions
- Performing Diagnostic Tests: MLS conduct a variety of diagnostic tests on patient samples, including blood, urine, tissue, and other bodily fluids. Tests may include hematology, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, blood banking, and molecular biology.
- Processing Specimens: They ensure proper specimen collection, labeling, and processing before performing tests. This includes preparing slides, centrifuging samples, or using automated machines for analysis.
- Analyzing Results: Interpreting test results, identifying abnormalities, and ensuring accuracy. MLS identify potential errors in results and take corrective actions as necessary.
- Running Instrumentation: Using complex laboratory equipment such as microscopes, automated analyzers, and centrifuges to conduct tests accurately.
- Maintaining Standards: Adhering to regulatory guidelines such as those set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and Commission of Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA)
- Assists the providers during bone marrow collection procedures.
- Following Safety Protocols: Adhering to laboratory safety standards, including handling hazardous materials, biological specimens, and chemicals with proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Science required
- MT(ASCP), MLS(ASCP) OR MLT (ASCP), AMT or equivalent current certification required
- Must have experience in chemistry and hematology
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with our current instrumentation and software: Sysmex, OCD Vitros and Orchard Harvest LIS
- Phlebotomy experience
