Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant positions for the Animal & Rangeland Sciences Department at Oregon State University (OSU).
The OSU Horse Center maintains horses for use in teaching, outreach and research. Boarding facilities are available to students of OSU as well. In order to ensure the health and safety of animals maintained at the Center, there must be knowledgeable individuals on site at all times. The herdsman is an important part of that and is expected to be on-site when the Director is not available.
The Herdsman position, which is a year-round live-in position offers the opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience, management skills, prepare for a career in the horse industry and board their own horse for a reduced rate.
Position Duties
- The Herdsman is expected to know and follow all procedures, rules and protocols
- The Herdsman is not expected or allowed to make decision in place of management; however, they are expected to enforce the rules and protocols and set an example for other student employees and users of the facility
- The Herdsman is expected to be available for late hour feeding, care and emergencies as they arise. In emergency situations, the Herdsman is expected to follow protocols and procedures as needed and notify the Director ASAP
- A proactive role should be taken in the maintenance and care of the horses and the Horse Center Facility
- Each Herdsman is required to work a minimum of 10 hours / week in crew, barn chores, feeding, etc. in exchange for pay
- Nightly checks of all the animals and facilities are performed in exchange for reduced rent
- At least one Herdsman should be on site from 6pm to 7am daily, from 6pm to 7am Friday through Monday / weekends, 24 hours on holidays

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.
This position requires driving a University vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the University; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions (as per Voluntary and Compulsory Driver Standards OSU Standard 125-155-0200) as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000 et seq.
