Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill eight part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Group Fitness Specialist positions for Recreational Sports at Oregon State University (OSU).

The Group Fitness Specialist reports to the Fitness and Wellness Formats Coordinator and is responsible for leading physical activity classes that are safe, effective, and inclusive. Group Fitness Specialists lead group fitness, Fitness Foundation and specialty classes. Group Fitness specialists will provide education and outreach to the OSU community, including educational / promotional video segments, tabling with information about fitness and wellness programs and services, and instruction to participants involved in fitness programs.

    Position Duties

    Position Details, Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Coach, motivate and lead physical activity sessions
  • Assist and encourage the initiation and maintenance of physical activity for participants and OSU community members of varying activity levels, experiences, and identities.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming community for all
  • Receive and apply feedback from fellow instructors, associates, and coordinators
  • Develop and lead safe effective programming that meets established format standards and expectations.
  • Set up class equipment (check-in device, audio system, fitness equipment)
  • Wear appropriate and professional fitness apparel and shoes
  • Ensure appropriate use of stereo, microphone, check-in device, and fitness equipment
  • Support the organization, cleanness, and clean-up of fitness equipment, multi-purpose rooms / spaces, and storage areas
  • Uphold department values and policies for students, members, and guests
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings
  • Execute emergency procedures and provide First Aid and CPR assistance
  • Assist with other department activities as assigned
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
  • High School student : Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student : 6 credit hours per term
  • Undergraduate international student : 12 credit hours per term
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School : 5 credit hours per term
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School : 9 credit hours per term
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
  • Additional Required Qualifications

  • Relevant experience related to programming, teaching, and / or leading fitness activities
  • First Aid, CPR / AED for the Healthcare Provider and DRS Bloodborne Pathogens certifications is required before employment begins
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

    Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Group Fitness training and / or Certification specific to dance, cycle, resistance training, or aquatic fitness.
  • Completion of PAC 289
  • Completion of PAC 290
  • Professional development, student development and / or leadership experience
  • Experience with customer service, conflict resolution, and / or problem solving
  • Awareness of and appreciation for individual uniqueness and diversity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Working Conditions / Work Schedule

    Period of Employment : One academic year (contingent employment is dependent upon satisfactory completion of a 30 day probationary period and satisfactory job performance as evaluated by immediate supervisor). 5-10 hours per week. Early morning, late night and weekend hours may be required.

    Compensation : Student employees are paid a wage consistent with the OSU Student Employment Pay Rate Guidelines. The Department of Recreational Sports identifies pay based upon job duties, level of responsibility and complexity of work to be performed.
