Position Summary

This recruitment will be used to fill five (5) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Library Collection Maintenance Project Student Assistant positions for the Library at Oregon State University (OSU). The position supports multi-year projects undertaken by the library’s Collection Maintenance unit to shift and reorganize the library’s physical collections and spaces. This is a physically active position with little to no computer / desk tasks. Training will be provided.

Position Duties

Library Collection Maintenance (CM) Project Student Assistants provide support for the RAS department which may include but is not limited to :

Support library projects including lifting, sorting, shifting, cleaning, and organizing library materials.
Maintain physical library collection including shelving books and pushing a cart weighing up to 100 lbs.
Maintain accuracy and utilize problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
Other : project, clerical, and cleaning duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.

Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.

Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard :

High School student : Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program.

Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student : 6 credit hours per term.

Undergraduate international student : 12 credit hours per term.

Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School : 5 credit hours per term.

Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School : 9 credit hours per term.

International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS) and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Additional Required Qualifications

Employee must be able to perform physically active tasks for 2 hours at a time including standing, walking, pushing a cart weighing up to 100 lbs, reaching overhead, and bending down for materials on shelves for 100% of work shift (excluding break times).

Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student.

Eligible and available to work starting Spring term 2025 through next academic year 2025-2026. Long-term commitment of 1 plus years will provide continuity for this multi-year project.

Ability to follow instructions and work independently and / or on a team.

Attention to detail and organized.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors and fellow coworkers both verbally and via email.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

Work schedule will accommodate classes and other commitments. Work hours will be within operating hours of the department, Monday-Friday, 8 : 00 am-5 : 00 pm. No evenings or weekends.

Minimum 10 hrs / week and maximum 24 hrs / week during the term.

Optional work available during Summer term and breaks.

Work will be performed throughout the library in both public areas and staff work spaces.

Will work in dusty and dirty conditions. Masks and gloves will be provided.

This is a physically active position with little to no computer / desk tasks.
