We're seeking a physician assistant to join our general / vascular / trauma surgery team in beautiful Southern Oregon. You'll be proud to work at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center, and IBM Watson Top 15 Health System.

Job Summary

Join our General, Vascular, and Trauma Surgery team in beautiful Southern Oregon as a Physician Assistant! Work alongside a collaborative team of seven PAs and and some of the most-experienced vascular and robotic surgeons on the West Coast, in a high-acuity, high-quality, fast-paced environment. This role offers a diverse scope of practice, including :

  • Intraoperative first-assistance in open, laparoscopic and robotic general surgery, as well as open vascular and endovascular surgery.
  • Participation in our innovative acute care surgery (ACS) model – providing consultation for emergency and trauma patients and rounding on hospitalized patients
  • Provision of post-operative and follow-up care to patients in our clinic.

Essential Functions

  • Preoperative Care :
  • Conduct thorough preoperative evaluations, including patient history and physical examinations.

  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests as necessary.
  • Educate patients and their families about surgical procedures, risks, benefits, and postoperative care.
  • Intraoperative Assistance :
  • Assist surgeons during operative procedures by providing technical assistance, such as suturing, tissue retraction, and wound closure.

  • Ensure all surgical instruments and equipment are prepared and sterile.
  • Maintain a sterile field and adhere to aseptic techniques throughout the surgical procedure.
  • Postoperative Care :
  • Monitor patients’ postoperative recovery and manage any complications.

  • Perform postoperative rounds, assess wound healing, and remove sutures or staples when appropriate.
  • Develop and implement postoperative care plans in collaboration with the surgical team.
  • Patient Management :
  • Provide comprehensive care to surgical patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • Prescribe medications and therapies as needed, following established protocols and guidelines.
  • Coordinate patient care with other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Documentation and Compliance :
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including histories, progress notes, and discharge summaries.

  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and contribute to the development of best practices.
  • Education and Training :
  • Educate patients and their families on health maintenance and disease prevention.

  • Mentor and train junior staff and students, as needed.
  • Participate in continuing medical education (CME) activities to stay current with advancements in surgical care.
  • Education and / or Experience :

  • Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program, required.
  • Successful completion of Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination® (PANCE), required prior to official hire-date.
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), preferred .
  • State licensure as a Physician Assistant (to be obtained before hire).
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a surgical setting preferred.
  • Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and basic life support (BLS) certification (to be obtained prior to hire date).
  • Strong clinical skills and knowledge of surgical procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Provides prompt, accurate service to internal and external customers.
  • Maintains knowledge of clinic’s exposure control plans for blood borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team to facilitate the achievement of goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct care to patients under the supervision of the physician.
  • Seeks and maintains working knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT / HCPS coding.
  • Has strong typing skills and working knowledge of electronic health records. (Experience with Epic is preferred .)
  • Communicates effectively with patients and co-workers.
  • Has working knowledge of clinical documentation standards and medical terminology.
  • Exhibits excellent customer service skills.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations :

  • BLS and ACLS certification required.
  • Current PA license in the State of Oregon required.
  • Registered under Oregon and Federal law to prescribe all classes of drugs necessary to carry out the duties described herein.
  • Physical Demands :

  • Ability to walk, sit and stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding tasks. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Ability to lift and / or move up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to speak and hear.
  • Ability to use arms, hands and fingers. Good manual dexterity and coordination is essential to successfully assist in surgery.
  • Capability to handle stressful situations and make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Working Conditions :

  • Exposure to a clinical environment with potential contact with infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
  • In general, you will enjoy a 4-day work week. Rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required.
  • On-call responsibilities required.
