What are the responsibilities and job description for the Butter Maker position at Organic Valley?
Summary of Role
The Butter Maker is responsible for making butter according to the cooperative’s specifications and production requirements and the sanitation of equipment involved in that process. This is a safety sensitive role. The Creamery is open 365 days a year including holidays.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Take daily cream and buttermilk inventories and verify vessel temperatures are within desired range prior starting production for the day.
Ensure equipment and areas are sanitary and fully operational prior to start of production.
Transfers cream between vessels and to churn via touch screen interface.
Transfers buttermilk from churn and between vessels via touch screen interface.
Operates churn to produce butter of specified grade and quality and performs quality control tests.
Record production data via physical and digital records.
Monitor churn to detect possible malfunctions or quality concerns as well as any undesirable butter results, report issues to supervisor.
Collects butter sample from each churn to perform standardized tests for moisture, butterfat, flavor/odor (grade), and color content.
Operate CIP system to clean churn, vessels, lines, and pumps as needed and maintain record of chemical concentrations.
Complete assigned daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual sanitation tasks.
Follow and comply with applicable good manufacturing, safety, and quality assurance policies and practices.
Accurately complete record keeping paperwork and logbooks.
Safely use the chemical dispensing system to distribute and utilize accurate quantities of approved sanitation chemicals.
This includes proper labeling/transportation of chemicals using designated containers.
Read and understand critical information and comply with related instructions, such as, but not limited to, chemical use and labels, Safety Data Sheets, Personal Protective Equipment and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
Assist with daily assembly and cleaning, swabbing, and sanitizing of butter packager and printer machines.
Obtain certification, for regular use, on electric pallet jacks.
Maintain chart recorders, including changing charts and pens.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Operate case/carton printers, butter packer, case packer, bulk filler, reworker as assigned.
Assist with the plant quality program including taking quality samples and use of quality testing equipment including operation of the X-ray detector and recording scale weights.
Assist with palletizing, shrink-wrapping, and tagging pallets to prepare for shipping.
Hand pack/tape cases, as needed.
Assist with general plant cleaning and/or property maintenance as needed.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Current butter maker’s license is preferred, or able to obtain a license.
Current butter grader’s license is preferred, or able to obtain a license.
Basic computer skills required. Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word preferred.
Working knowledge of good manufacturing practices.
Strong attention to detail.
Must be able to work weekends.
Sanitation experience in a food processing environment preferred.
Handwriting must be neat and legible.
Manual dexterity to perform frequent wrist twisting and bending motions.
Ability to read and interpret critical information and follow specific instructions.
Ability to frequently lift/carry 50 pounds, occasionally lift (up to) 80 pounds with assistance, ability to push/pull up to 2,500 pounds using material handling equipment.
Ability to occasionally bend, twist/turn, reach above shoulders, and climb throughout the shift as needed.
Basic math skills including arithmetic; ability to perform and interpret basic calculations related to count, weight, and time.
Effective collaborative skills; must perform in group settings.
Verbal and written communication skills; ability to follow instructions and to clearly express ideas in a concise and professional manner.
Strong work ethic with history of good attendance.
