What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nursing Supervisor – Medical Department position at Oriana House, Inc.?
Essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to:
- Effectively orients and trains supervised employees in job duties.
- Conducts effective and timely performance evaluations and processes paperwork appropriately for supervised employees.
- Effectively addresses disciplinary issues with supervised employees; accurately and thoroughly documents and processes disciplinary actions in a timely manner and in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Ensures supervised employees meet minimum training requirements and monitors training attendance.
- Processes payroll in UKG and handles issues for supervised employees.
- Completes Samanage forms: NUAF, billet changes and submits change forms in an accurate and timely manner.
- Communicates with HR to maintain accurate billet lists in order to fill open positions.
- Creates and conducts training for department staff to expand knowledge of mental illness, addiction, and related medical concerns to ensure high quality medical care.
- Ensures supervised employees meet minimum training requirements and monitors training attendance.
- Monitors Carelogic to ensure that all failed activities and unsigned documents are corrected in a timely manner in order to ensure timely billing.
- Assigns duties, creates monthly schedules, and coordinates nursing services.
- Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice within the Agency.
- Evaluates nursing activities to ensure client care, staff relations and efficiency services.
- Works with Medical Manager to create nursing protocols and workflows to create a standard and/or expectation for the department.
- Encourages staff to participate in identifying services essential to positive client outcomes.
- Facilitates open and effective communication among staff.
- Participates in the development of staff training and presents information on medical issues including, but not limited to: signs and symptoms of substance use disorders, emotional disturbances, universal precautions/standard precautions, disease transmission, medication policy, CPR, and First Aid.
- Accurately counts, records, and maintains a secured storage area for all prescription medications, sharps, syringes, and other medical equipment within unit and monitors patient compliance.
- Reviews and approves all invoices: pharmacy, contract nurse, and laboratory.
- Maintains accountability of medical equipment and supplies and schedules monthly biohazard waste management.
- Cooperates with medical provider in coordinating medical care plans.
- Monitors pharmacy policy for handling and ordering medication to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Supervises direct care staff and functions as a resource.
- Collaborates with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development.
- Serves as spokesperson for nursing matters and represents Oriana House with professional nursing and related organizations.
- Investigates and resolves complaints, or refers unusual problems to superior.
- Provides situational assistance with direct client care.
- Provides coverage of staff during time off at all facilities.
- Provides onsite supervision at all facilities.
- Fosters economical use of supplies and equipment in an effort to contain patient and unit costs.
- Oversees compliance with standards of care, ethics, and confidentiality.
- Complies with OSHA requirements.
- Continues professional training, stays current in professional developments, and maintains license.
- Learns new tasks, remembers processes, maintains focus, completes tasks independently, makes timely decisions in the contexts of workflows, and is able to complete tasks that have a speed and/or productivity quota.

SECURITY AND SAFETY
- Complies with all Agency security standards, including procedures and electronic equipment/devices.
- Performs job duties in a safe and conscientious manner. Complies with safety policies and procedures; utilizes safety precautions for hazardous conditions (e.g., wet floor signs, rock salt, and safety signage); uses required PPE; communicates any unsafe practices and conditions to supervisor and remedies what is within scope of job; participates in safety drills, and attends safety training.
OTHER
- Ensures clients’ rights are upheld. Maintains client and staff confidentiality according to Agency policies and procedures; state law; and federal regulations to include Confidentiality on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Patients Records, 42 C.F.R. Part 2 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA"), 45 C.F.R. Parts 160 and 164.
- Attends staff meetings and required training sessions.
QUALIFICATIONS: Registered Nurse with valid Ohio License. One (1) year of clinical and nursing management leadership required. Three (3) years of RN nursing experience required with one (1) year in behavioral health or Emergency Department preferred. Maintains the required licensure/certification in good standing. Must be willing to travel; reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and a driving record that does not preclude the employee from being covered under Agency liability insurance. Must have the cognitive skills needed to complete tasks, including abilities such as learning, remembering, focusing, categorizing, and integrating information for decision making, problem solving, and comprehending. Must have the ability to simultaneously address multiple complex problems and multi-task without loss of efficiency or accuracy. Must be able to perform effectively and efficiently under high stress, emergencies, and conflict situations. Must have the ability to effectively work with Agency employees, outside contacts, and a diverse client population.
