What are the responsibilities and job description for the Concrete Finisher position at Orion Marine Group?
Orion Marine Group has an immediate opening for Concrete Finishers, in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. This position is accountable for providing craft expertise and support to Orion Marine Construction – Atlantic & Caribbean. Incumbents are required to perform a variety of tasks including placing, finishing, protecting and repairing concrete. Typically, they will work closely with Project Superintendent, Project Foreman, and other skilled crafts persons.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Works as assigned by the Project Superintendent to ensure the successful completion of on-going or new marine construction projects.
- Checks the forms that hold the concrete to see that they are properly constructed.
- Sets the forms that hold concrete to the desired pitch and depth and align them.
- Spreads, level, and smooth concrete, using rake, shovel, hand or power trowel, hand power screed, and float.
- Molds expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge.
- Produces rough concrete surface, using broom.
- Operates power vibrator to compact concrete.
- Wets concrete surface and rubs with stone to smooth surface and obtain specified finish.
- Wets surface to prepare for bonding, fill holes and cracks with grout or slurry, and smooth using trowel.
- Cleans chipped area, using wire brush, and feel and observe surface to determine if it is rough or uneven.
- Chips, scrape, and grind high spots, ridges, and rough projections to finish concrete, using pneumatic chisels, power grinders, or hand tools.
- Waterproofs or restore concrete surfaces, using appropriate compounds.
- Works closely with Project Superintendent, Project Foreman, Crane Operators, and other skilled crafts persons to complete projects in a safe and efficient manner.
- Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

- Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).
Position Requirements:
A minimum of two (2) years' experience as a Concrete Finisher or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities is required. The incumbent must have good knowledge of 1) the practices and materials of the concrete trade, 2) the physical characteristics of various types of materials used in the construction of marine and civil structures, 3) the operation of various types of heavy civil equipment, and 4) the importance of safe work practices in a heavy civil and marine construction environment. Incumbents must also be capable of passing a standard concrete finishing craft tests that demonstrate proficiency to perform the job.
The incumbent must be an effective verbal communicator and be able to keep simple records of time and material used for each project.
