JOB DESCRIPTION:
Maritime Mechanics are tasked with servicing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of watercraft and their trailers, under the guidance of the Lead Maritime Mechanic. Responsibilities extend to light surface craft, Jet Skis, and various models of inboard and outboard motors. Provide on-the-job training (OJT) to new military and civilian mechanics, ensuring the maintenance team's skills are up-to-date and comprehensive.
GENERAL TASK DESCRIPTION:
· Perform repair and maintenance to include, but not limited to, aluminum and fiberglass hull repair, patching, welding, metal forming, sheet metal work, minor body repair, fender repair, preventative engine maintenance, repair for both inboard and outboard marine engines, and intermediate & depot level repair as required.
· Service and repair jet and propeller dive systems and gearing.
· Perform complex electrical troubleshooting and repair for ignition, lighting, panel controls, accessories, and DC output points.
· Repair, reuse, or salvage parts as necessary to maintain maximum watercraft readiness, within manufacturer’s guidelines.
· Perform preventative maintenance and/or corrective repair in accordance with the Navy Maintenance & Material Management (3M) Program.
· Perform shore-based operational/functional testing per Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines prior to watercraft equipment issue, upon receipt, and after component replacement or repairs.
· Conduct repairs and maintenance for the fleet, including engines, hulls, and electrical systems, ensuring adherence to OEM guidelines and NAVOSH safety standards.
· Perform operational and functional testing of watercraft post-repair to confirm readiness and reliability.
· Provide on-the-job training (OJT) and instruction to junior mechanics, enhancing team skill levels and ensuring quality maintenance practices are consistently applied.
· Maintain comprehensive maintenance records for each watercraft, ensuring documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
EDUCATION:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
MINIMUM SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
· Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certified mechanic with commercial small outboard engines and ancillary equipment.
· Desired experience includes troubleshooting and minor repairs of inboard marine diesel engines, as well as familiarity with water jets.
· One (1) year of experience in hull repair for both aluminum and glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) is a plus.
· Certifications: OEM certifications for inboard/outboard engines and any relevant certifications for hull repair and engine maintenance.
· Proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and steering systems, along with demonstrated ability to perform both minor and major repairs.
· Knowledge of requisition procedures and warehouse operations is essential.
· Eligibility to obtain the appropriate level of security clearance if required for specific tasks or locations.
· Be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite Products (i.e., Word, Excel, PPT)
· Location: San Diego, CA.
· Travel is required.
