JOB SUMMARY :

The Controller will be responsible for managing the financial operations of the company, overseeing accounting, reporting, and compliance activities. The Controller will work closely with senior leadership, FP&A, actuaries, and external auditors to ensure financial integrity and optimize financial performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Financial Reporting and Compliance :

  • Prepare and oversee the monthly close, quarterly and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting standards (GAAP and SSAP).
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant insurance industry regulations, such as statutory reporting requirements, tax filings, debt covenants and solvency regulations.
  • Oversee filings with regulatory bodies, including the NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) and other industry-specific entities.
  • Manage internal controls and ensure that financial operations meet external and internal audit standards.

Cash Flow Management :

  • Oversee cash management activities, ensuring adequate liquidity for operational needs and financial obligations.
  • Manage investment accounting for reserves and policyholder funds, ensuring the alignment with the company's investment strategy.
  • Internal Controls and Risk Management :

  • Establish and maintain a strong system of internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting.
  • Identify financial risks related to investments, claims, underwriting, and reinsurance, and recommend mitigative strategies.
  • Team Leadership and Development :

  • Lead and mentor a team of accountants and finance professionals, fostering an environment of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and the smooth execution of financial processes.
  • Build a strong finance organization capable of supporting the company’s growth and responding to changing business needs.
  • Provide guidance and professional development opportunities to team members to support career growth and technical expertise.
  • External Relationships :

  • Liaise with external auditors and regulators to manage audits and regulatory examinations.
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including actuaries, underwriters, and senior management, to ensure financial goals are met.
  • Technology and System Optimization :

  • Work with IT and systems teams to implement and enhance financial systems and tools, improving efficiency and reporting capabilities.
  • Stay updated on technological advancements in financial reporting and accounting tools, implementing improvements as necessary.
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Education : Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. A CPA, CMA, or other professional certifications are highly desirable.
  • Experience : A minimum of 10 to 15 years of experience in financial management or accounting in the insurance industry. Minimum 5–7 years in a leadership role, ideally as a Director, Senior Manager, or VP of Finance.
  • Leadership Skills : Proven ability to lead and inspire a team, manage complex financial operations, and collaborate with senior executives and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge : In-depth understanding of accounting principles (GAAP, SSAP), insurance industry regulations and financial reporting
  • Skills :
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.

  • Proficiency with financial systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or specialized insurance software).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with senior management, auditors, and regulators.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly and effectively and able to work collaboratively and maintain a solution-oriented approach.
  • High level of integrity and professionalism, with a commitment to transparency and ethical decision-making.
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized, problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a focus on driving financial performance.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

    While performing general office duties for this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand and / or walk around (including the use of stairs). Other demands include the ability to openly communicate with others by talking, listening, and reading, being able to lift light objects (

    The office environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and results driven. An employee must be willing to work their regularly assigned work schedule, and in times of need, be able to work an extended schedule depending on company or departmental needs, project requirements, or customer demands.
