DESCRIPTIVE STATEMENT

OF POSITION:

The ELL teacher provides specialized instruction in designated schools and teaches English as a Second Language to English Language Learners for the purposes of developing the student’s ability to effectively perform courses of study in English and acquire the English language. The role of liaison between school and families serves to enhance school engagement and partnership.

   

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Massachusetts Elementary Teacher Certification
  • Massachusetts ELL Certification Required 
  • Experience working with English as a Second Language students in a school setting 
  • Working knowledge of one other language or experience in learning a foreign language, Spanish, or Portuguese language abilities preferred.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to promote, establish, and maintain constructive working relationships with staff, district, and building administration, students, and parents
  • This person must be resilient and reliable while demonstrating an ability to build a strong community culture.
   

SALARY:

Per prevailing contract

Immediately through June 20, 2025

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ELL TEACHER:

  1. Has current knowledge of federal, state, and city guidelines of ELL protocols and is able to keep organized systems of documentation to meet compliance
  2. Conduct assessment of the English proficiency of pupils whose native language is other than English; helps to identify pupils eligible for services designed to improve English language proficiency.
  3. Plan, develop, and implement ESL instruction and Massachusetts English language proficiency standards (WIDA).
  4. Adapt curriculum to provide individual, and small group instruction to meet the needs of English Language Learners.
  5. Demonstrate cultural proficiency and use of effective and culturally relevant instructional practices.
  6. Provide a nurturing and supportive learning environment that encourages student responsibility and incorporates a variety of instructional techniques and strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students 
  7. Utilize effective techniques of classroom management, behavioral interventions, and communication to engage students.
  8. Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement
  9. Maintain complete and accurate records of student progress and evidence of growth and progress
  10. Identify support services needs of ELLs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving barriers to learning.
  11. Collaborate and communicate with the ELL students content teacher(s) to align instruction. 
  12. Support ELL students English language acquisition and classroom instructional needs (instructions, academic vocabulary, reading, writing support, and clarification of assignments).
  13. Oversee and conduct Massachusetts state test (ACCESS) and administers screening tests for initial identification of ELL students. 
  14. Prepare for and assist with organization of ELL students reclassification meetings for monitoring and for those ready to transition out of ELL services. 
  15. Evaluate the language need of students families who speak a language other than English at home and recommend appropriate language support
  16. Translate between families, students, and school personnel regarding student academic needs
  17. Act as a liaison between home and school to enhance family engagement
  18. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
