What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Sailing Instructor position at Orrs and Bailey Yacht Club?
Overview
HEAD INSTRUCTOR
The Abbot Fletcher Sailing School is the sailing program of the Orr’s-Bailey Yacht Club located on Orr’s Island in the coastal town of Harpswell, Maine. The program is a member of US Sailing and Northeast Sailing Association. The Head Instructor will oversee a youth program that involves approximately 60-70 students ages 8 and above over a six-week period beginning early July. The Head Instructor manages a team involving two assistant instructors (Level 1 certification) and several volunteer assistants. Classes include those for beginners, intermediate sailors, and sometimes advanced intermediates and racers. Instruction is provided in Optimist Prams, Club 420s, and a Rhodes-19 using the club’s facilities, which include a clubhouse with classroom, a sailing shed, extensive floats, and three Boston Whaler coach boats. The Head Instructor works with, and is responsible to, an Executive Committee of the Club’s Sailing Committee.
The Head Instructor will set and maintain a respectful and positive tone within the program while overseeing the safety of all operations alongside the fun of summer sailing.
Qualifications:
The Head Instructor must be 18 years of age or older, must be able to swim, must have CPR/First Aid and US Sailing Level II certifications, must be a knowledgeable and experienced sailor and boat handler personally, and must have very good communications and management skills. As safety is paramount to the program, the Head Instructor will be required to complete an on-line video course on concussion.
Responsibilities:
The Head Instructor will be a key player in the over-all success of the sailing program. The Head Instructor will work closely with the program’s Executive Committee, and some interactions will extend beyond the period of on-water instruction. In many cases these “out-of-season” needs can be handled remotely if needed. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Help identify, recruit, and recommend potential staff candidates to the sailing program’s Executive Committee. All hiring decisions will be made by the Executive Committee, but the Head Instructor’s advisory role is important.
Work with the Executive Committee to develop the annual program calendar, including the allocation of resources to different levels of instruction.
Maintain the physical safety of students and staff on and off the water at all times during program operations.
Set the expectation of good boat handling and sportsmanship, and help to instill confidence in learning both.
Ensure that club rules are observed by students and staff.
Monitor the use and condition of all equipment and work with students, staff, and the Executive Committee to maintain boats and equipment in good condition.
Evaluate and help develop the skills and effectiveness of instructional staff.
Help keep up public communications, including the AFSS Facebook account. Prepare a weekly AFSS Newsletter that is emailed to all registered students and OBYC membership.
Assist with the club’s summer social events that help raise funds to support the sailing program.
