The Tool Maker is responsible for producing custom and/or modifying existing medical instruments and implants as an integral member of the Product Development team for use in spine surgery. The Tool Maker provides faster manufacture and fabrication times than outside suppliers are able to in order to help accelerate the company’s responsiveness to its customers.

What will your duties and responsibilities be?
The following are the essential functions of this position. This position may be responsible for performing additional duties and tasks as needed and assigned.
- Manufactures and fabricates custom implants and instruments utilizing conversational CNC programming and/or Mastercam programing on multi axis milling machines and lathes to produce machined components in a reasonable amount of time with no quality issues
- Assists in coordinating outside operations with engineers and inspecting components and assemblies
- Provides material, design and manufacturability feedback to the Product Development Engineers
- Fabricates and manufactures other components as needed to support company objectives
- Maintains the Specials/Machine shop and equipment to a high standard by performing basic cleaning and maintenance
- Complies with all Orthofix Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions including those mandated by the FDA
The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.
- Develops processes required for implant and instrument manufacturing and fabrication including identifying all operations, fixturing and associated tooling
- Programs machines in the most practical and efficient way possible
- Manufactures or fabricates implants and instruments using all Prototype Shop machine tools as needed
- Assembles manufactured and fabricated components
- Holds close tolerances and inspect manufactured and fabricated components including assemblies
- Effectively communicates material, design and manufacturability feedback to Product Development Engineers
- Read and understands engineering drawings including the understanding of GD&T principles.
- Demonstrates good housekeeping skills

- Hurco Mill and Lathe Programing
- Mastercam
- Trumpf Laser Marker
- FANUC Wire EDM
- GTAW Welding
- Manual Laser Welding
- Prior Medical Device
- Ability to stand as needed during the setup and running of parts
- Ability to pick up, push, pull and handle the minimum of 40lbs independently
- Must be able to program at a computer, program at a machine, perform machine set-ups and operate the machines
- Visual performance essential for job duties, safety glasses required, need to endure machining noise up to 90 decibels
- Need to maintain alertness during the setup and operation of machine tools
- Eyesight and hearing must be correctable to a standard level
- This position requires frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching
- This position requires frequent standing
- This position requires frequent moderate lifting of 15-40lbs
- This position requires frequent exposure to dust, fumes, gases, odors, or other airborne irritants
- This position requires frequent exposure to chemicals and/or solvents
- This position requires frequent exposure to high air temperatures, radiant heat sources (sunlight, hot exhaust, etc.) or direct physical contact with hot objects (welding operations, etc.)
