- POSITION SUMMARY
- Assists physicians and staff in coordinating and providing patient care. Functions as primary liaison between patients, staff, and physicians.
- RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Clinical:
- Assists surgeon during office hours by facilitating patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, specimen collection and preparing for exam.
- Provides patient education related to treatment
- Answers, triages and returns phone calls
- Communicates changes to clinic schedule as needed
- Patient Care:
- Removes or applies wound dressing
- Assists in the application or teaching related to bracing/casting
- Removes sutures or staples after physician assessment of wound
- Prepares supplies and draw up injections for physician
- Electronically retrieves x-ray, MRI, or other records for physician
- Administrative:
- Obtains insurance pre-certification as needed for diagnostic procedures, treatment, medication, or surgery.
- Books surgery and completes all associated surgery paperwork, prepares consents, etc.
- Schedules pre-admission testing for patients by contacting PCP or hospital
- Assures that any special surgical instruments/devices or DME have been ordered for surgery and post op care
- Sends completed pre-admission testing to appropriate surgery location prior to patient surgery
- Prepares x-rays and other patient information for doctor to take to surgery
- Completes disability forms or other documents requested by patients, reviewing with physicians as needed
- Works with Patient Accounts department to ensure that hospital charges or consults are entered for billing and works to resolve any missing ticket reports or answer any coding questions
- Provides coverage for vacation/sick calls from other clinicians
- Develops and maintains pre-op patient education program. May be class format or one-on-one incorporating printed materials, audio/visual aids, etc. to ensure patients receive and understand pre-operative instructions
- Places prescription refill orders at direction of physician

- Provides assistance and support to leadership in implementing policies and procedures as necessary.
- Actively participates in training, and conducting day to day work activity by adhering to all policies and procedures as enumerated in compliance and risk management programs.
- QUALIFICATIONS
- Education, Experience, Certification and Licensure Requirements:
- Candidates will be required to have completed a medical assisting or comparable education. Certification related to the educational program is desired. Prior experience in a physician office setting is essential, preferably in an orthopedic or surgical environment. Previous casting experience desired. Must maintain current CPR certification.
