Maintenance Technician duties and responsibilities

A Maintenance Technician is responsible for keeping a facility operating and repairing any problems when they are discovered before they have a chance to worsen. A Maintenance Technician will usually be required to perform a wide range of repair tasks around a facility. Some other tasks a Maintenance Technician may be called upon to do include:

  • Performing routine maintenance around the building such as fixing structural damage, for example, window, door or wall repair
  • Repairing broken or leaking plumbing to avoid water damage and restore full use of water fixtures
  • Working on damaged electrical wiring when a shortage or severed wire occurs
  • Maintaining the building HVAC equipment in order to keep climate control in the facility functioning properly
  • Applying preventative measures to the building to reduce the risk of future problems, such as using a sealant on a flat roof
  • Fixing potential safety hazards to avoid injuries
  • Painting the building when old paint has become faded or chipped

REQUIREMENTS:

1. High school diploma or equivalent

2. One year maintenance experience preferred

3.  Meet the following physical demands

     a. Stand for long periods of time

     b. Display manual dexterity

     c. Reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, and crawl

     d. Regularly lift or move up to 20 pounds

     e. Frequently lift or move up to 40 pounds

     f. Occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds

     g. Display hearing, visual, and olfactory acuity

REPORTS TO:

  1. Superintendent
  2. Building principal

JOB GOALS:

  1. To assist in the servicing, cleaning and maintenance of district equipment, building areas and grounds to maintain a sanitary, orderly and attractive condition conducive and safe for learning.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBLITIES:

  1. Implement the policies of the Board of Education.
  2. Communicate appropriately with supervisors, other employees, students, and visitors
  3. Maintain a friendly and helpful environment.
  4. Maintain an acceptable standard of personal appearance.
  5. Follow established procedures and schedules for the maintenance of the facilities and grounds.
  6. Assist in custodial services to all school facilities and grounds.
  7. Maintain all work areas in a safe and sanitary standard as required by the school district.
  8. Use chemical products only as directed by manufacturer.
  9. Attend meetings and training classes, as directed.
  10. Assist in the use of a variety of tools and equipment and operate them in a safe and proper manner.
  11. Assist in the preventive, corrective, and emergency work on a wide variety of structures and systems.
  12. Maintain records as needed to provide documentation of all work performed.
  13. Close all buildings each day, determining before leaving that all doors and windows are secure and that all lights (except safety lights) are turned off.
  14. Make requests of supplies to head custodian/maintenance.
  15. Assume responsibility for tasks other than those listed which may be assigned by a supervisor.

Pay rate based upon years of experience when that experience is directly relative to described duties and is subject to evaluation by the superintendent; the classified pay schedule will be applied according to evaluated experience.
