Position Title: American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher
Pay Grade: Certified Instructional Salary Schedule Period of Employment: 10 months

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Administrator
General Responsibilities:
Provides American Sign Language (ASL) instruction to secondary students by creating a classroom environment that develops competencies, knowledge, and skills in accordance with each student’s ability. Provides inclusive and accessible learning opportunities for all students while teaching ASL and Deaf/deaf culture.

- Maintains professional self-behavior in such a manner that the profession, school district, and school are positively represented.
- Provides care and supervision of students.
- Utilizes class space to create an environment conducive to learning.
- Observes and evaluates student’s performance and development; maintain accurate and complete records.
- Provides effective supervision of volunteers and paraprofessionals when applicable.
- Works effectively with peer leaders, supervisors, and administrators.
- Utilizes effective classroom management skills.
- Provides for sound and effective techniques of instructions.
- Implements relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
- Responds to parent inquiries in a timely manner.
- Performs duties deemed necessary by the School Board and Superintendent for the efficient and successful operation of the school system.
- Complies with all school laws, State Board of Education regulations, and all rules and regulations made by the School Board and Superintendent.
- Attends all meetings called or approved by the Superintendent, Principal or Assistant Principal.
- Serve as a role model.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal.

Requisite Education and Experience:
- Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree.
- Must possess or be eligible for Virginia licensure and completed a major in American Sign Language or 24 semester hours above the intermediate level in American Sign Language.
- Hold a current, valid qualified or professional certification by the American Sign Language Teachers Association; or hold a current, valid Virginia Quality Assurance Screening Level III Interpreting Certification or higher issued by the Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or hold a current, valid Registry of Interpreters for Deaf certification at least in one of the following: Certification of Interpretation (CI), Certification of Deaf Interpretation (CDI), Reverse Skills Certification (RSC), or Comprehensive Skills Certification (CSC); or hold a current, valid National Association for the Deaf Level IV Certification or higher, and earned a minimum of three semester hours of methods of teaching foreign languages at the elementary and secondary levels from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Experience in computer technology preferred or desirable and/or willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
